The fight against Israel Adesanya proved far more pivotal for Joe Pyfer than anyone had imagined. The 29-year-old middleweight entered the bout as a slight underdog, despite riding a three-fight win streak while Adesanya was struggling through a three-fight skid. Regardless, he showed immense grit and skill while handing the former champ his fourth consecutive loss. After securing the second-round TKO win, the relieved Philadelphian spoke to Daniel Cormier during the post-fight interview. In a raw, emotional moment with DC, Pyfer revealed he had recently overcome a profound personal crisis, one that nearly cost him his life just weeks prior.

“I am [on cloud nine],” an emotional Pyfer said. “It’s weird, DC. It’s like I could see this moment happening. I almost took my own life a couple of weeks ago, and I found God, and I hate crying, man. So, I’m going to keep it together. God restored me, baby. That’s the only reason I’m here. USA, baby. Let’s go.”

It’s unclear what made him consider taking such drastic action. But during the post-fight interview, he elaborated on it a bit more.

“I was born into chaos and a messed-up family, as many children are. It’s not like mine’s super special compared to anybody else’s. But I was a victim of my own self-destruction,” Pyfer explained. “I had lust issues. I had just this toxic cycle of coping. Nothing drug-related or anything like that, but I had a dream where I was disgusted about who I was.

“I broke a lot of people’s hearts around me, and particularly one person that I never will hurt again. Sh-t man, I (was) just disgusted with myself. I went and got therapy. In this dream. I feel like God chose me, and took my hand, you know, gave me a restored life, a renewed life. Man, the only thing I can say is that I feel like all the pressure of the world is gone… and I feel like a true free person.”

Perhaps that’s what motivated Joe Pyfer to deliver his best performance on Saturday night at UFC Seattle. The opening round was competitive, with both fighters trading blows, but the tempo shifted dramatically in the second.

Adesanya chose to stand and trade—a decision that ultimately cost him. Pyfer capitalized, securing both mount and back control with authority. When ‘The Last Stylebender’ attempted to defend, ‘Bodybagz’ adjusted seamlessly, unleashing a relentless ground-and-pound attack. With Adesanya offering little resistance, referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the contest with 42 seconds left in the round.

While Pyfer’s post-fight confession was shocking, he had already hinted at a spiritual change days before the fight during an interview.

Joe Pyfer explains his ‘out-of-body experience’ with God

Days before the fight, Pyfer appeared in an interview with Full Send MMA. And he opened up about a life-changing spiritual moment, describing it as an “out-of-body experience” that reshaped his identity.

“I feel like I’ve had a complete resurgence—a full 180 — when it comes to my faith and God and Jesus Christ,” he confessed. “I had this out-of-body experience where I was able to see who I was, and I was pretty disappointed.

“God gave me direction and a chance to change my life,” he said, calling it “the craziest presence I’ve ever felt.”

Once known for his intensity and inner struggles, Pyfer now feels “reborn,” stating, “I used to be trapped by anxiety, addiction, and my own mind… but God restored my life.”

Joe Pyfer was fighting a battle behind the scenes before he entered the Octagon tonight. The win over Adesanya only reinforces his changed approach to life. The win, that too over a legend, marks a new chapter for Pyfer, one defined not just by his power in the octagon, but by the profound personal battle he has already won.
