What’s happening with BJ Penn is heartbreaking. Unless this is some elaborate trolling — and even then, it would be deeply unsettling — it seems clear that ‘The Prodigy’ may be seriously struggling with his mental health. Fans were stunned and deeply concerned when the former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion posted a video claiming his mother, Lorraine Shin, had been murdered and replaced by a government clone trying to steal the Penn family fortune.
It’s hard to imagine the pain and confusion someone must be going through to believe something like that — especially when it’s directed toward their own mother. If BJ truly believes his family is in danger from someone impersonating a loved one, that’s not just paranoia — it’s a potential mental health crisis. The MMA world has always looked at BJ as a legend, a pioneer, and one of the most naturally gifted fighters to ever step into the Octagon. But this goes far beyond fighting. At this point, the hope is that Penn has people around him who care enough to step in and get him the help he may need — not just for his safety, but for the well-being of his family as well.
The UFC veteran deleted that post a few days after making it, which made fans hopeful that perhaps things were getting better for ‘The Prodigy’. But alas, that seems not to be the case. There seems to have been a regression in his mental health as Penn made another video. And this time, he accused his brother, JD Penn, and his sons of being impostors. But what was terrifying and eyebrow-raising, was the caption, where he talked about his helplessness and speculated what might happen if he indeed did take things into his own hands.

“If I harm any of these people that are acting like my mom or my brothers, I go to jail and lose everything. If they harm me, nothing will happen to them and I lose everything.. I have many black belts over the years that are police officers. Are you guys gonna help me? Are we going to help JD and Reagan and my mother and look for them and investigate these fake frauds who are trying to steal everything from my family?” Penn wrote along with the video on his Instagram.

Of course, this is just further proof that things are just waiting to go wrong for Penn if he doesn’t get the help he needs right now. Especially given the type of claims the former UFC champ made against his brother.
What convinced BJ Penn that his brother had been replaced by a lookalike?
According to BJ, the main reason he is convinced his brother has been replaced by a clone is because of changes in his physical features. In the video, the former UFC champ claimed the ‘fake JD’ has “brown eyes”, as opposed to the ‘real JD’s black eyes. Moreover, this imposter is “taller”, has a “crooked front tooth”, and has a prominent, “Jay Leno chin”, none of which he claims JD had at the last Thanksgiving dinner.

In fact, BJ took an old picture of his brother and a newer one with all these alleged changes. Moreover, he also made a half-face collage, “and he doesn’t match up”. One of the things you could notice straightaway in this ‘collage’ is JD is grinning and showing his teeth in one of them, while he isn’t in the other. Not to mention the two images are taken under very different lighting, at different angles, and are far apart in time.
Indeed, the eye colors do look a bit different, which could be down to the lighting. The features of JD do look slightly different in each picture, but not enough to make one think they are the same person. Unless, of course, you are convinced your family members have been murdered and replaced by clones, as BJ does. Let’s just hope the UFC legend gets the help that he needs before things go seriously wrong. What do you think about BJ Penn’s concerning post about his brother, JD?
