“He’s just crazy… doesn’t give a shit about anything.” That’s how Francis Ngannou once described Nate Diaz. It’s a reputation the Stockton native continues to embrace. Known for his raw, unapologetic persona, Diaz has built a loyal following without ever holding a UFC title. And when it comes to family attendance at his fights, his stance is just as blunt.

Ahead of his MMA return fight against Mike Perry under Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, Nate Diaz sat down with comedian Theo Von to promote the upcoming event. While talking about family, Theo asked if his relatives “travel” with him to fights or big events. Naturally, the former UFC star set the record straight.

Nate Diaz shrugs off the presence of family and friends at his fights

“Everybody’s invited. I’m always like, ‘Where’s the hell everybody at?'” Nate Diaz replied. “Fighting is a crazy thing. I don’t invite people to my fights, but it’s a public location. They’re invited. You know what I’m saying? ‘F–k, you ain’t at the fight, bro.’ I ain’t even want anybody at the fight. ‘Well, why not, motherf–ker?’ I think people get offended at me for not bringing them to a fight.

“Bro, c’mon. I got to fight somebody. You know the risk of that? ‘Please come! I want you to.’ You know what I’m saying. I’m just like, ‘Yo, its open to public. Pull up if you want to pull up.’ I don’t give a f–k.”

Nate Diaz explained that while some relatives may feel slighted by not receiving personal invitations, he sees no need to formally include anyone. For him, fighting is an intense, personal experience—not necessarily something meant for family viewing.

Despite that stance, Diaz has historically shared a close bond with his brother Nick Diaz, with the two often supporting each other throughout their careers. Their relationship hit a rough patch in recent years, particularly as Nick dealt with personal struggles while Nate focused on his own family life. However, the brothers have since reconciled, with Nate sharing an image of the two meeting Chuck Liddell.

Diaz’s attitude stands in contrast to many UFC fighters who go out of their way to include loved ones. At UFC 324, for example, Paddy Pimblett reportedly spent heavily to fly friends and family in for his title opportunity, though he ultimately suffered a loss to Justin Gaethje.

Similarly, Alex Pereira brings his sons and other family members to UFC events.

In Nate Diaz’s case, the stakes remain even higher. From the start of his MMA career, Nate has fought aggressively and brought a full-scale war to the cage. His duology with Conor McGregor perfectly illustrates this, as both fights turned into bloody battles, something that’s harder for family members to watch. Even so, Diaz remains interested in completing the trilogy.

Diaz opens up on the trilogy with Conor McGregor

For years, Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz have chased the chance to settle their trilogy. Fans consider their last two fights some of the greatest in UFC history. They first clashed at UFC 196 in 2016, after McGregor moved up to the welterweight division when Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot and withdrew from their lightweight debut. As a result, that led to a historic showdown, where the Stockton native showcased his durability and submitted McGregor in the second round.

Then they faced off again at UFC 202, where McGregor avenged his loss and evened the score at 1-1. Both fights also made history in business, selling around 3 million pay-per-views combined. Despite that, Nate Diaz still wants to fight McGregor for the BMF belt.

“I believe they want me to come back and fight Conor McGregor, not Oliveira,” said Diaz on the Theo Von podcast. “I’m like, well, I’m going to fight for my belt that I created, that I deserve since I started a whole division to bring value up to all these f—— fighters.”

While Diaz continues to push for the matchup, McGregor has remained inactive since 2021, leaving the trilogy in limbo.
