Herb Dean’s night at UFC 330 appeared to be heading in the wrong direction after the veteran referee was repeatedly booed by the crowd at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. It became particularly apparent when Dean stepped in to officiate the prelims fight between Tresean Gore and Vicente Luque. However, the longtime official eventually earned the approval of fans after making a timely stoppage that prevented a UFC veteran from absorbing unnecessary punishment in what turned out to be his final fight.

Herb Dean officiated the lightweight fight between Esteban Ribovics and Edson Barboza. From the opening bell, Ribovics looked like the better fighter as he brought the fire to the veteran. He tagged Barboza multiple times during the first round, and it seemed like the Argentinian could score a quick finish. But Barboza managed to survive, only to endure another barrage of strikes. The Brazilian suffered a nasty injury during the fight when a leg-kick collision with Ribovics left his right shin split open. Blood was gushing from the cut as Barboza progressed into the second round.

The second round proved to be the beginning of the end for Barboza.

Ribovics continued the onslaught, dropping the Brazilian legend with heavy strikes. However, Dean stepped in at the right moment to wave off the contest at 1:32, saving Barboza from taking any further damage.

After suffering his fourth defeat in a row, Edson Barboza finally hung up his gloves, bringing his career of more than a decade to an end. He broke down in tears as he announced his retirement.

Understandably, Barboza’s latest loss would hurt more than any of his previous fights because it came in his final bout under the UFC banner. But he has definitely endured a couple of mid-fight injuries throughout his career and even fought through them to secure the win.

In 2021, Barboza fought Shane Burgos at UFC 262, where the 40-year-old once again suffered an injury during the fight. Back then, the Rio native also bled profusely from the wound. However, the result turned out very differently, as Barboza scored a highlight-reel delayed knockout over Burgos after landing a solid jab-right hook combination in the third round.

Following that, another instance came during his fight with Sodiq Yusuff in 2023. After an early flurry from his opponent, Barboza suffered some heavy cuts and deep bruising on his face. But he once again battled through the adversity to claim victory via unanimous decision. Unfortunately, he couldn’t pull off that magic once again tonight.

But while the MMA world suddenly turned its attention toward honoring Barboza’s remarkable career, Herb Dean received praise for his timely stoppage in the City of Brotherly Love.

“Time to give Herb Dean some cheers after that stoppage. It was enough already,” MMA Fighting’s Damon Martin wrote on X.

Following the seasoned journalist, several others also praised Herb Dean for his impressive stoppage. 

Herb Dean Gets Redemption After Stopping Edson Barboza Fight at the Right Time at UFC 330

One fan chimed in and wrote, “Herb’s interruption was absolutely spot-on. So sad that Edson’s last fight had to end like this… it’s really tough to watch a legend bow out in this way. I hope they put together a cool tribute to release now.”

Following that, another fan also believed that Dean made the right call with the stoppage, writing, “Herb Dean finally makes a wise decision.”

Herb Dean, one of the sport’s longtime veteran referees, often finds himself embroiled in controversies over his officiating. Recently, Dean was caught in a heated dispute with former champion Alex Pereira, who even wanted the UFC to cut the seasoned referee after he failed to call out Ciryl Gane’s illegal back-of-the-head shots at the UFC White House. But that wasn’t all.

This year has been especially rough for Dean, as he again found himself at the center of controversy over his officiating at UFC Baku. He didn’t deduct a point from Shara Magomedov despite the Russian committing multiple fouls against Michel Pereira. Alex Pereira, once again calling out Dean’s mistake, labeled him a “coward” and blamed the referee for his compatriot being cut from the UFC following the loss.

Following those controversies, Herb Dean can finally breathe a sigh of relief after making a swift decision to save Edson Barboza from further punishment at UFC 330. Because of this, fans kept praising the veteran referee for getting the call right. One fan wrote, “Good job by Herb Dean to get in there.”

Another user believed Dean showed mercy toward the Brazilian, writing,  “Herb Dean with a mercy stoppage. Edson Barboza is done. #UFC330”   

Continuing the string of positive reactions, another fan was simply glad to see Dean make the right call after a long time, writing, “Herb Dean does something right for once #UFC330.” 

At tonight’s event, Herb Dean definitely redeemed himself by saving retired veteran Edson Barboza from taking unnecessary punishment. But it will be interesting to see whether the veteran official can continue his streak or finds himself entangled in another controversy.
