While rapper Pitbull has been away from the spotlight, UFC head honcho Dana White might just be the one truly living up to the ‘Mr. Worldwide’ title these days—and frankly, it fits. The Bossman has long envisioned the UFC as a global powerhouse from the very get-go and in recent years, he’s been making that dream a reality. Last year, the promotion planted its flag in Saudi Arabia with UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs. Aliskerov which marked the company’s explosive debut in the Kingdom. This theme has been pretty constant for a long time. Remember UFC 112 which was the juggernaut’s debut in Abu Dhabi? Or White’s recent wish to take the promotion to Spain and South Africa. The message was clear: Dana White & Co. are on a mission to take the UFC to every corner of the world.

And now with the surprise twist—a leak suggesting the UFC’s next big destination would be none other than Azerbaijan, known as the ‘Land of Fire.’ Now it’s official. Speaking earlier this week, the Bossman confirmed that UFC will make its Azerbaijan debut on June 21, live from Baku Crystal Hall.

“Azerbaijan and the city of Baku have an incredible history of hosting massive global sporting events,” he said. “We have so many great athletes from in and around this region that it was a natural next destination for us.” The excitement has reached new heights with the rumored addition of Rafael Fiziev vs. Ignacio Bahamondes—a banger of a co-main, according to Full Violence on Instagram.

With top-tier fighters, a fresh international venue, and growing anticipation from fans worldwide, UFC Baku is already making history. For some Western fans, Baku might seem like an unexpected choice. But from a strategic standpoint, it’s spot-on. Azerbaijan shares borders with Dagestan (Russia), Georgia, and Armenia—regions that are rich in MMA talent.

With Russia currently off-limits due to political tensions, Baku offers the perfect alternative to tap into that talent pool and fanbase. The fight card itself is shaping up to be fire. The main event features Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree Jr., a matchup that already has fans buzzing. Let’s see how the MMA community is reacting to this bold new chapter.

Fans erupt as Dana White & Co. adds “insane” Rafael Fiziev vs. Ignacio Bahamondes to UFC Baku

Ranked #11 in the lightweight division, Rafael Fiziev has solidified his place as a fan favorite with his high-octane style and relentless pace. His last appearance inside the Octagon came at UFC 313, where he stepped in on short notice to face Justin Gaethje. Originally, Dan Hooker was set to fight ‘The Highlight’, but a hand injury forced him out, opening the door for ‘Ataman’ to take the fight in Las Vegas.

The stakes were high—Fiziev was returning from an 18-month injury layoff, eager to make a statement. And although he fell short on the judges’ scorecards after a hard-fought three-round war, fans praised his grit and striking display, which only added to the buzz around his next outing: UFC Baku. This time, the experienced 155fer will take on Ignacio Bahamondes in what many fans are calling the “Fight of the Year.”

“Actually an insane fight,” one fan wrote, while another chimed in with, “Guaranteed violence… I ain’t mad at this one! Beautiful violence for sure.” With the two known for their flashy striking styes, Fiziev vs. Bahamondes is quickly shaping up to be a co-main event that could steal the show. Still, not everyone is optimistic about ‘Ataman’s chances. At 32 and riding a three-fight losing streak, some fans are questioning whether this is the right matchup for him—especially against the surging 27-year-old Bahamondes, who enters on a three-fight win streak.

The size discrepancy is also raising eyebrows. Standing at 6’3″, ‘La Jaula’ holds a significant height and reach advantage over the 5’8″ Rafael Fiziev. “Bro, that’s a two-foot height difference between opponents,” one fan exaggerated, while another bluntly stated, “Yeah, Fiziev is done.” Adding to the skepticism is the Azerbaijani’s previous hint at dropping down to featherweight after his loss to Gaethje. He claimed he could make 145lbs comfortably, but the idea was met with pushback from the MMA community—including Chael Sonnen, who questioned the move.

Still, the matchup with Bahamondes has reignited the debate. “Wasn’t Fiziev going down to featherweight?” one fan asked. Another echoed that sentiment: “Bad move for Rafael. Think he should’ve gone to 145. Bahamondes is gonna be too big for him.” Interestingly, the excitement around this fight has even led some fans to suggest it should headline the Baku card over the current main event, Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree Jr. “Main event xD,” one fan joked—implying that this potential slugfest might just steal the spotlight.
