The flyweight division should be on high alert, as a new force is rising to the top—and it has no plans of slowing down. Alexandre Pantoja has been ruling the flyweight division since capturing the title from Brandon Moreno in 2023. Two years later, the Brazilian champion has successfully defended his belt multiple times. But with a rising star proving his mettle at UFC Vegas 103, could he have finally found his match?

Uzbekistani fighter Ramazonbek Temirov is closing the gap between himself and the division’s elite, securing a unanimous decision victory over veteran Charles Johnson at UFC Vegas 103. With this win, Temirov has firmly established himself as a serious contender in the flyweight ranks. Now, he has a request for UFC CEO Dana White.

While having a conversation at the UFC post-fight press conference, the Uzbek fighter not only called out Kai Kara France and Brandon Moreno but also took shots at the flyweight champion, Alexandre Pantoja, “Hey Dana, inshallah, I will be champion. I will cleanse the division. Kai Kara-France, Brandon Moreno, Pantoja—no problem. Inshallah, I’m a champion, inshallah. I’m ready. I’m Uzbek.”

Going into the fight at UFC Vegas 103, Temirov was the underdog as his opponent, Johnson, was riding on a four-fight winning streak. However, the underdog status did help ‘Temurlane’ to focus on the clash, throwing clean shots in round 1 with sharp jabs and kicks. Temirov made sure that Johnson struggled to connect despite a flashy front kick.

In Round 2, Johnson increased his pressure, controlling the clinch and landing a key elbow on the break to even the fight. The second round clearly belonged to Johnson. However, as the bell for the final round rang, Temirov increased his pace, and no matter how much Johnson tried, he failed to keep up. Well, the victory has for sure given the Uzbek fighter the necessary confidence to call the top brass of the division. But what’s happening in the flyweight department? Let us find out.

The troubling tales of the Alexandre Pantoja dominated flyweight division

The flyweight division has been the black sheep of the promotion for quite some time. Despite their best efforts to revive the division, it has often struggled to capture mainstream attention. It must be noted that the UFC has thought of dismantling the division earlier, but it appears they found some market for it. Unlike other divisions, the flyweight division has more or less just three or four high-profile fighters driving its growth.

Apart from Manel Kape, Brandon Royval, Brandon Moreno, and the champion Alexandre Pantoja, the flyweight division lacks significant star power. The Brazilian champion has been such a dominant force within the UFC that Dana White invited Rizin Bantamweight champion Kai Asakura to challenge Pantoja. Despite his best efforts, the Japanese fighter conceded defeat at UFC 310.

Well, Ramazonbek Temirov has just fought his second fight within the UFC and he has a long way to go before he claims the title, given that what are your expectations from the flyweight division? State your thoughts in the comments below.
