The US Open proved to be a memorable tournament for Taylor Townsend. While she wasn’t able to reach the later stages of the singles event and was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Aryna Sabalenka, the women’s doubles draw was a completely different story. Along with Katerina Siniakova, she won their fourth Grand Slam title and completed the Career Grand Slam. But Townsend didn’t even get to celebrate the achievement to its fullest as she returned to singles action just days later.

The American signed up for the Guadalajara Open and began her campaign on Monday. She played Tatjana Maria in the opening round and racked up a hard-fought 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory. Though Townsend could have taken a break after the grueling US Open run, she seems to be determined to replicate her doubles success in singles. Having made a decent run at Flushing Meadows, she will be aiming to reach the later stages in Guadalajara.

But Townsend’s path in the tournament is anything but easy. She is scheduled to take on the in-form Marta Kostyuk in the second round. Townsend has never defeated the Ukrainian and trails 0-2 in the H2H record. The two last played each other earlier this year at the Indian Wells Masters, where Kostyuk comfortably triumphed 6-3, 6-2.

Townsend appeared to be a bit tired in the opening stages of her match against Maria. Despite this, she put in a solid effort in the first set and dragged it to a tiebreaker. But her resilience faded in the end as Maria clinched the breaker 7-0 to take the vital lead. However, Townsend shifted gears in the next set and turned the match on its head.

She dominated Maria’s serve in the final two sets, breaking it on a total of six occasions. Townsend was clearly the better player overall and advanced to the second round following a remarkable comeback. The performance was especially impressive because her US Open campaign concluded just days ago. While her singles ranking may have dropped to No. 98, she is still one of the best in the business when it comes to doubles.

Townsend has enjoyed massive success with Siniakova over the last few years. The duo has now won four major titles since 2024. They could have had five titles by now, but were denied the US Open crown last year by Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski, who triumphed 6-4, 6-4 in the final.

Regardless of that defeat, it can’t be denied that Townsend and Siniakova have solidified their status as one of the most successful women’s doubles pairings of this decade. They have especially elevated their game in Grand Slams.

Townsend and Siniakova first teamed up at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. Straight up, it felt like a match made in heaven as they triumphed after dropping just two sets in six matches. They defeated Routliffe and Dabrowski 7-6, 7-6 in the final to clinch the title.

Their next major title win came at the 2025 Australian Open. It was another solid campaign where the duo didn’t drop a set until the semifinals. They faced Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-wei in what was a pretty evenly contested final. But Townsend and Siniakova proved to be too good at the end of the day and triumphed 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.

The 2026 season has undoubtedly been their most successful year as a team. They first clinched the title at the French Open, dropping just one set in six matches. Townsend and Siniakova took on Aleksandra Krunic and Anna Dalinina in the final. Unlike their previous major final, this one was decided in straight sets as Townsend and Siniakova won 6-2, 7-5.

The US Open triumph only brought even more glory to the well-established team. It was again a very strong campaign from the duo as they lost just one set in six matches. They played out a thrilling final against Robin Montgomery and Ashlyn Krueger. Despite losing the opening set, Townsend and Siniakova completed a superb comeback to triumph 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.

This victory saw Siniakova win her second Career Grand Slam in doubles. She had previously won all four majors with her former partner and compatriot, Barbora Krejcikova. Townsend has now also joined the elite list after finally winning the doubles final at Flushing Meadows on her third try.

Before reaching the 2025 final with Siniakova, she reached the same stage alongside Caty McNally in the 2022 edition. Interestingly, it was Siniakova and Krejcikova who triumphed 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 in that match.
