Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe
Taylor Fritz‘s search for a singles title in 2026 continues as he has come up short in a final for the second consecutive week. He lost 6-4, 6-4 to compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the final of the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle. The world No. 10 wasn’t a threat as his opponent won in only 67 minutes. After the match, Fritz hilariously admitted not liking Tiafoe because of the result, even though the two are very close friends.

“I’ll start by just saying congrats to Frances (Tiafoe) and his team,” he said during his post-match speech. “Just too good. You played great today, man. Super happy for you. As much as I don’t like you right now… You’re one of my best friends. I’m super happy for you to get the title. You’ve been having a great year, so congrats, dude.”
This is only the second time that Fritz has suffered a defeat at the hands of Tiafoe in a tour-level match; the first was in 2016. He had led the H2H record 7-1 before the final and was being considered the favorite coming into the match.
However, Tiafoe looked to be the better player from the get-go and was especially solid on his serve. He didn’t allow Fritz a single opportunity of clinching a break and held his serve throughout the encounter.

Tiafoe won a break in both sets and racked up a comfortable win in the end. This result saw him become the first American to lift the title in Halle since the tournament’s establishment in 1993. This is also the biggest title win of his career, as all of his previous three triumphs had come in ATP 250 events. He has now finally bagged a 500-title.
The 28-year-old has once again proved why grass is his preferred surface, as he has elevated his form in just a couple of weeks. Tiafoe had come into the grass swing following one of the most devastating defeats of his career against Matteo Arnaldi at the French Open. He had suffered a dramatic 7-6, 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 loss after five hours and 26 minutes in R16.
The American had a promising start on grass and reached the quarterfinals at the Stuttgart Open. He has now followed that up with a stunning campaign in Halle. Tiafoe began the tournament with a strong 6-2, 7-6 victory over French Open finalist Flavio Cobolli. He then racked up a 6-4, 7-5 win against Sho Shimabukuro.
Tiafoe’s biggest test of the event came in the quarterfinals against Felix Auger-Aliassime. It was here that he showed incredible resilience and clinched the match 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(12). He saved three match points in the tiebreaker before eventually winning it 14-12. A comfortable 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Daniel Altmaier saw him reach the final.
The victory over Fritz will be a major confidence boost for Tiafoe as he gears up for Wimbledon, which is from June 29.
Frances Tiafoe finally ends his unwanted losing streak in finals
Tiafoe had a win-loss record of 0-4 in finals above the ATP 250 level before taking the court in Halle on Sunday. This included a defeat to Fritz in Tokyo during the 2022 season and a defeat to Jannik Sinner at the 2024 Cincinnati Open.

This streak has now ended with Tiafoe’s maiden ATP 500 tournament triumph. Tiafoe recalled one of his favorite sayings as he reflected on his previous final losses.
“I’ve lost a lot of 500 finals. I’ve lost a lot of finals in my career,” he said during his post-match interview. “This is big. I just want to say one of my favourite scriptures: The pain that you’re feeling does not compare to the joy that is coming. Obviously, that has been proven very true.”
Having achieved a remarkable feat at the Terra Wortmann Open, Tiafoe’s primary goal now will be to surpass his previous best run at Wimbledon, which came in 2022 and saw him reach the R16.
