What Are the Main Storylines After These Withdrawals?
While some of these withdrawals were foreseeable, a few of them came as a shock. However, as far as their impact on the tournament is concerned, nothing much is going to change as of now. Players Jack Draper, Holger Rune, and Arthur Fils all made their exit before the draw was announced. However, Matteo Berrettini was scheduled to face off with Alex de Minaur.
Dealing with injuries since last season, he unfortunately had to withdraw. However, in a kind gesture, he did send his heartiest apologies to all those who waited for his comeback. Berrettini said, “I’m really sorry to have to withdraw from the tournament. I have always enjoyed being and playing here and feeling your incredible support. Thank you to the tournament for their fantastic organization and I hope to see all of you again very soon.”
The story remains pretty similar on the women’s side as well. The absence of Zheng Qinwen, Danielle Collins, Ons Jabeur, and LoisBoisson is unlikely to have a significant impact on the draws. However, the withdrawals may be a ray of hope for some of the lower-ranked players.
Rising stars like Joao Fonseca will try to capitalize on their absence. On the other hand, renowned names like Paula Badosa and Emma Raducanu would also want to use this as an opportunity to return to their former glory.
