Behind every football prodigy, there is a strong foundation built on sacrifice. It’s not just the sacrifice of the player themselves but also of their family. Before illuminating the global stadiums, Florian Wirtz was just a kid cycling 13 kilometers to academy practice in Germany. His parents, Hans-Joachim and Karin, helped to nurture his humble nature, managing his early club and acting as his trusted lifelong agents.

Who are Florian Wirtz’s parents?

Florian was born on May 3, 2003, to Hans-Joachim Wirtz and Karin Groß and grew up in the Brauweiler district of Pulheim, a small community on the outskirts of Cologne. His childhood was defined by a strong emphasis on outdoor physical activity and a massive focus on soccer. His parents, Hans and Karin, are huge sports enthusiasts. In fact, his father managed a local club. His father managed the local club, SV Grün-Weiß Brauweiler, and his mother coached youth handball. His parents act as his representatives and confidants.

Growing up, the family did not have a TV in their house, which Wirtz credited for keeping him outdoors. He did not even get a mobile phone until he was 12 and regularly cycled 13 kilometers to get to this training academy. These definitely helped him become a good athlete.

Wirtz was actually born in the family home in the Brauweiler district of Pulheim – “that’s how brave we were back then,” said his father, Hans-Joachim, whose youngest of 10 children entered the world on 3 May 2003.  Wirtz’s mother is in her mid-60s, and there is a huge age difference between him and his parents since he is the youngest.

Where did Hans-Joachim Wirtz and Karin Wirtz meet?

Hans and Karin’s meeting and romantic tale is a family secret and not out there in the public. However, the couple is known to have settled in the Brauweiler district of Pulheim (just outside of Cologne, Germany), where they raised their 10 children and ran the local sports club, SV Grün-Weiß Brauweiler. They have definitely created a huge family and made sure all their children received the proper discipline and love to become great.

Hans was originally a locksmith who worked for the German border protection agency. Karin was a professional handball coach and also a gymnast. She has accompanied Florian to all his training sessions and oversees his finances.

What ethnicity are Florian Wirtz’s parents?

Florian and his family are German by ethnicity and nationality. He was born in Pulheim, Germany, and represents the German national football team. His family was engulfed in sports, and it was not just a hobby for them.

Both his parents are trained athletes and run a football club, so naturally, he and his nine siblings grew up around sports. His family has deep ties to North Rhine-Westphalia, where he spent his early life and developed his football career.

Florian has always received the utmost support from his parents, even though their methods might sometimes seem strict to others. He grew up without a TV and did not have a phone until he was 12. But he said that these measures helped him stay outdoors and concentrate on his athletic abilities.

In fact, Hans is Florian’s father and manager who looks after his finances. Florian once proudly stated to the Bundesliga, “I know that he will never want something bad for me or will focus on money,” Wirtz Jr explained of his father, who is now in his early 70s. “We have always had a good relationship. I have huge respect for my dad. I’m happy that I have an experienced man at my side who can advise me well.”

This guidance from his mom and dad, who were also athletes and ran a football club, helped him immensely. He had the best mentors right at home. Hans was a trained locksmith who later studied sports at the Cologne Sports University and became a special education teacher.

“It was always our desire that Florian have fun when playing football,” Hans-Joachim explained. “That should continue to be the top priority, even if you now have to consider a few other things in your career. But fundamentally all the numbers are of no interest. He should have fun and play football well, and we as a family will of course enjoy that.”

With mum Karin, who was a handball coach, and his youngest sister Juliane, also a footballer, Florian was surrounded by sport as a kid. “There are very few family members who have not played football,” Wirtz explained. “There’s always football on TV. In our family, a lot goes on around football.”  This healthy family dynamic helped Julian foster the grit and practice needed to become a great footballer.
