Canada routed a 9-man Qatar 6-0 to secure their first-ever World Cup victory. But the monumental occasion was cut short by a devastating injury to one of their brightest stars, Ismael Kone, who left the pitch on a stretcher. During his debut World Cup, the dynamic midfielder was on the receiving end of a leg-breaker, but within 24 hours, he has already revealed his next role with the national team as he aims to join head coach Jesse Marsch.

“This battle is a test to my faith in him and to my character. And honestly, I’m ready for it because ALLAH will never give you a challenge that you can’t overcome, and being tested is the best gift from god,” Kone wrote on his Instagram.
After reiterating his faith in god and his plans, Kone immediately lightened the mood as he revealed his future plans.
“To Canadian brothers, as I turned myself into assistant coach to support you from the sideline.😂 I wanted you to know that I love you guys from the bottom of my heart, and our brotherhood is everything to me. What you guys did yesterday will stay with me forever. I’ll be back very soon, and we’ll keep making more memories together,” he cheekily announced his next role during the World Cup.

The injury was as horrific as it gets for Kone. Canada were cruising at BC Place as they were leading 3-0 against an already 10-man Qatar when Kone received the ball and was marching upfield. Qatar’s Assim Madibo lunged from behind and caught Kone. The impact was immediately apparent as Kone crumpled onto the pitch. He was unable to move and had to be stretchered off the pitch.
Displaying incredible courage, he was waving to the crowd as he was being taken for treatment. Kone was immediately taken to the hospital, where he had surgery on Thursday.
The rash tackle resulted in a red card for Madibo as Qatar were reduced to nine men. Canada seized on their man advantage and scored three more times. But the teammates were not celebrating at full flow as they were still thinking about Ismael Kone.
The 24-year-old Kone plays for Sassuolo in Serie A and earned a place on the Canadian World Cup roster after a promising 2025/26 season where his dribbling and chance creation caught everyone’s eye. Having started each of the two games, he grew into the heart of his team after picking up his 42nd international cap during the Qatar game.
Prayers pour in for Ismael Kone
The tackle occurred right in front of the Canadian bench, and head coach Jesse Marsch was able to identify the severity of the tackle.
“It happened right in front of the bench. We could all hear it. I knew right away,” Marsch told Reuters. “Everyone could hear the bones snap. Your heart goes out to him, and everybody’s a little shaken by the whole experience,” he added.
He had first-hand experience regarding this kind of injury as he watched Tajon Buchanan suffer a similar injury in 2024. Buchanan fractured his tibia during a practice session in July 2024 during the Copa America and was sidelined for roughly five months.
“It will be a big loss for us. He’s been an amazing player these last two games and Ismael is a big part of the heart of our team,” Marsch added. Kone, the acting assistant manager, could hand-pick Nathan Saliba as his replacement for Canada’s final game of the World Cup.
Kone’s teammates were shocked but had no other choice but to go on and finish the match. Nathan Saliba, who scored an incredible free kick shortly after coming on as a substitute, held Kone’s jersey while celebrating. He explained his heart-warming celebration in a post-match interview.
“I didn’t feel like celebrating. I was just thinking about my friend. We’re a second family. We’re going to do everything in our power to make sure he feels good and supported,” Saliba revealed.
Defender Alistair Johnston also pitched in, revealing how this might spur the Canadian team to do even better.
“For us to be at our best, he’s a big part of it. But it’s given us now something else to play for. That’s what this team is all about. It really is a brotherhood. It’s really difficult to see one of your brothers go down,” he added after challenging Canada to reach the knockouts for the first-ever time and do it for Kone.
Kone’s injury marks the first major injury during the World Cup. A host of stars like Hugo Ekitike, Xavi Simons and Rodrygo all suffered serious injuries towards the end of the season and missed out on the World Cup.
The sudden exit mirrors one of the most famous injury heartbreaks in modern World Cup history, when a peak Neymar Jr. suffered a fractured vertebra during Brazil’s 2014 quarterfinal clash against Colombia, prematurely ending his tournament on home soil.
Kone was relatively injury-free throughout his career. But this unfortunate leg fracture could sideline him for the foreseeable future. He might be targeting a return during the 2026/27 season for Sassuolo. Until then, he will be assisting Marsch virtually and cheering his Canadian teammates.
