The NIL revolution changed the landscape of college sports in the US. It’s the athletes who have now come to the forefront in a brand-new era, thanks to this new commercial agreement. Teenage superstars like Quincy Wilson can get endorsement deals and multimillion-dollar sponsorships. And he just turned 17!! That’s how this game-changer of a policy is helping quality athletes get access to substantial financial exposure, and that too while practically being a college student.

Yes, concerns have been raised about rising inequality and low-revenue sports getting overshadowed, cornered, and even shut down in favor of high-revenue sports like football. People are debating the positives and the pitfalls of NIL for everybody involved. So, one American sprinter has given his views on how NIL can positively influence colleges.

When former US sprinters Rodney Green and Justin Gatlin got together for their podcast “Ready Set Go,” Rodney Green brought up the point of how, thanks to NIL, any college can target an athlete with Olympics exposure or even an Olympics gold medalist like Quincy Wilson. He mentions, “If you’re the national record holder, gold medalist, someone like Quincy or anything, going to a school that highlights your school a little bit, I would encourage most of them to use the leverage you have to get NIL.”

And Green’s point seems simple. If an athlete has any selling power, then it is a win-win scenario for both parties. The athlete gets to earn some NIL points while the college now has an Olympian among their ranks. Green further mentions, “I’m use Quincy for the youngest Olympic gold medalist and you (Quincy) decide to go to Florida and NIL is involved. I’m pretty sure they (Florida) have it. Yeah, I’m pretty sure they could make do it and say we’ve had the youngest track and field gold medalist attend our school.”

And it is not that hard for the Gators to get Quincy in the first place. And Green makes it pretty clear about his opinion. He mentions “They’re gonna have that money for him and he (Quincy) could stand to make pretty good money and NIL money outside of his New Balance thing.” In case you didn’t know, Quincy Wilson recently featured on the front of the New Balance website. It’s now very surprising, however.

Quincy Wilson has been playing the field

For someone like Quincy, NIL is especially big. Even if it doesn’t bring in as much money as football or basketball would, athletes like Quincy can still earn from outside sources. So, Quincy Wilson is happy. And the college that gets him gets to show him off, especially if it’s a college like Florida. For Florida, Quincy Wilson will be a marquee student. So that college is happy too. It’s a win-win.

Even though these are just discussions and opinions, these views do become critical in the context of Quincy Wilson’s college hunt. Quincy Wilson has been a wanted man. The Olympic fame has brought numerous suitors to his doorstep, in some ways, literally. Wilson has been to Texas A&M University to check out if it could be his next academic destination.

Although we all know Quincy’s focus was on the program’s athletic facilities. In fact, the Aggies coach Pat Henry came to Quincy’s home along with Olivia Ekpone, one of Texas A&M’s most successful. Obviously, we all know why. However, there hasn’t been any finality in Quincy’s search. In fact, the youngest US Olympics track and field gold medalist has also looked into the University of Georgia. Not to mention other big-shots like Tennessee and even Texas Tech University.

Options are open. Maybe more visits are on the cards before Quincy Wilson makes his choice. NIL has certainly made Quincy’s life much more happening. We will have to see how he uses NIL to further his Olympic dream.
