Even before Mya Lesnar became the top collegiate shot putter in the nation, she was a quiet force with a very famous last name. As the daughter of WWE and UFC legend Brock Lesnar, you’d expect her to have big shoes to fill. But instead of stepping into the wrestling ring or the octagon, Mya carved out her own path in the shot put circle.  With a national-leading throw of 64 feet, 3¾ inches, an NCAA indoor title under her belt, and Mountain West records shattered, Mya isn’t just living up to her father’s legacy. She’s completely rewriting it in her own powerful style as she heads into the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Well, still, her journey to Colorado State wasn’t about hype or headlines; it all started with a simple phone call. What happened next left her future coach completely stunned. ‘I don’t know who the Brock is.’ Can you believe CSU’s head coach, Brian Bedard, had no idea who Brock Lesnar was when the wrestling icon called to pitch his daughter?

I didn’t recruit Mya out of high school. I was asleep at the wheel,” Bedard confessed. He got a voicemail from “this guy named Brock” who said, “This is Brock Lesnar, and my daughter’s a pretty good thrower out of Minnesota.” Bedard’s reaction? “I’m thinking, I don’t know who the Brock is. I don’t follow WWE.” The voicemail was even played aloud in CSU’s business office.

There, a staffer named Brandon, who recognized the name quickly, Googled it, revealing Mya was a Minnesota state champion thrower. So, when Bedard finally called back, he told Brock, “Yeah, I’m interested. I’d love to have you guys come out on a visit.” Bedard even joked, “Brock actually recruited me.” The Lesnars visited Fort Collins, and Mya, who was competing at Arizona State at the time, instantly felt a connection with CSU.

Bedard said, “We had a great visit here, developed a really good connection.” That bond was strong enough for Mya to transfer to CSU, where she’s since blossomed into a national champion. Now, everyone’s wondering: can Mya’s awesome chemistry with Bedard help her clinch an outdoor title in Eugene? Bedard’s hilarious story about Brock’s unexpected call just makes Mya’s journey even more charming.

Mya Lesnar, Colorado State’s incredible shot put star, isn’t just carrying on her dad Brock Lesnar’s amazing athletic genes—she’s living by his incredibly heartfelt advice. This senior, who’s currently ranked #1 nationally with a massive 19.60-meter throw from May 2025, just nabbed her fourth Mountain West title with an 18.61-meter toss. He’s said, “No matter what I do for the rest of my life, I’ll always be Mya Lynn Lesnar’s father first and foremost. I love Mya very much… I have been a blessed man because of her.” His guidance is a huge part of who Mya is. Mya herself gives her dad a ton of credit for keeping her grounded, especially with all her success. She shared, “The biggest thing he taught me was do not let your trophies or anything you’ve done change you as a person… be successful but also to not have an ego.”
