Lia Smith, a former diver at the Middlebury College Swimming and Diving team, passed away last week. She was 21 years old. Smith was last seen on October 17 and was reported missing on October 19. Following this, a probe was launched for her search involving the FBI. The Vermont State Police department, in a field near the Knoll, found her body. The authorities confirmed there is no suspicion of foul play.

The Middlebury president, Ian Baucom, took to Instagram and shared the unfortunate news. He wrote, “I have spoken with Lia’s family to express my heartbreak. As president, and far more as a fellow parent, I ache for them. This is a profound loss that nobody should have to endure.”

He further added, As we mourn, I want to express my deep appreciation for the efforts of our Student Affairs staff who have been offering such compassionate support to Lia’s family, friends, and students across our community. We will continue to support them in every way possible.”

Smith came from Woodside, California, and joined the Women’s Swimming and Diving team at Middlebury as a diver. She was also a member of the Chess Club and the Japanese Club. She was pursuing a double major in computer science and statistics.

Baucom confessed that Smith would always remain a crucial member of the Middlebury family. He ended his statement with, “I know that this is a wrenching time. Please continue to extend care and compassion to one another and to yourselves.” It didn’t take netizens too long to send heartfelt eulogies for Smith.

Most of the social media users kept following the news in the hope that Smith would be found safe and sound. But reality hit in the worst possible way. One account stated, “So terrible. RIP sweet girl.” Meanwhile, love and condolences kept pouring in to the comments section. A user wrote, “I am so sorry. She looks like such a kind, sweet girl. Sending love to her family, friends and the students of Middlebury!”

It was heartbreaking for people who personally knew Lia Smith. A comment read, “Such heartbreaking news. She had a truly beautiful soul. Her memory will live on in everyone who was lucky enough to know her. My heart goes out to her family and friends during this difficult time. 🖤🖤.” It’s not just her friends and family, but the entirety of Middlebury College was mourning the loss. And reflecting on that, one account wrote, “I’m heartbroken for her family. Middlebury College staff and community as a whole are in my prayers along with her family.”

Furthermore, people kept praising Middlebury College for their prompt updates and kind words for Smith. One fan pointed that out and wrote, “Heartbreaking on so many levels. The kindness in her expression and this description of Lia, portray someone who had so much to offer the world.” And in a world where transparency is pretty rare, Baucom’s words received commendations from the public.
