The Tokyo Olympics 2020 has seen its fair share of triumphs and successes. However, there’s no joy without controversy, and it’s kicked up once again. American journalist David Hookstead just took a shot at LeBron James and Colin Kaepernick after Tamyra Mensah-Stock’s wrestling gold medal.

Tamyra Mensah-Stock’s gold medal win was nothing short of inspiring. She became the first black woman to win gold in wrestling at the Olympics, and her opponent made history too. Blessing Oborududu became the first Nigerian first wrestling medalist. After the history making moments, Tamyra gave a resounding interview.
A reporter asked her how it felt to represent the USA since she had the flag wrapped around her. She said, “It feels amazing. I love representing the US, I freaking love living there. I love it, and I’m so happy I get to represent U-S-A!” Well, that is one proud American, but David Hookstead did not hesitate to criticise other African-American athletes.

Colin Kaepernick is the NFL quarterback who took a knee during the American national anthem. Hookstead took aim at him and NBA legend LeBron James, who has also been vocal about racism in America. Hookstead said, “This is what real patriotism looks like. LeBron James and Colin Kaepernick could learn a lesson from her.”
Although the tweet divided opinions, it shouldn’t take away from Tamyra Mensah-Stock’s historical win at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. She hasn’t just added a gold to the US’ medal tally but has become an inspiration to many young athletes.

Although the tweet divided opinion, the reaction was mostly one-sided. Many chided Hookstead for trying to bring politics into Tamyra Mensah-Stock’s incredible win, while some claimed LeBron James was in a different category. Neither the NBA legend and two-time Olympic gold medalist, nor the quarterback turned activist have commented on the issue. However, the reaction from the public is hilarious.
