Even when a star couple appears at a hometown team’s game, fans don’t always care. This is what happened when Olivia Dunne and her boyfriend, MLB star Paul Skenes, went to see the New Jersey Devils play the Buffalo Sabres on December 22.

Dunne, who looked stunning in Prudential Center in Newark, wore a bright red long-sleeve top and a black beanie, and Skenes wore a brown checked coat atop a beige top and a dark baseball cap.

However, that night, fortune did not favor the couple’s side, as the Sabres scored 3-1, continuing their six-match winning streak, and the Devils lost in spite of Jack Hughes scoring early in the game. But despite the loss, the Devils’ official Instagram account made sure to highlight the couple on social media.

They shared an image and video on Instagram of the two in the stands, with Olivia Dunne cheering, “Go Devils!” The ex-LSU Tiger was raised in Westwood, New Jersey, and practiced at ENA in Paramus. And the Devils have always had her support; she showed up to a game in a Devils jersey last year and was featured on the arena jumbotron, cheered by the fans.

This time, however, online reactions were far from enthusiastic. Although many Devils fans loved the game and featured on the team’s Instagram, the brutal loss left the majority of fans angrily reacting and wholly uninterested in the couple’s Instagram feature.

Olivia Dunne’s appearance didn’t move disappointed Devils fans

In response to the Instagram post, one fan commented, “I’d rather celebrate winning games than this.” Another added, “Glad you caught this, now go catch some scoring..” With emotions and tensions running high after the loss, it’s no surprise that fans had little time for positivity.

Beyond gymnastics, Olivia Dunne is a social media powerhouse with 5.3 million Instagram followers, having turned her college athlete platform into major NIL deals. Her fame has grown further through modeling, magazine covers, and being named on influential creator lists. Meanwhile, Paul Skenes also commands attention as a top MLB prospect, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 Draft.

However, fans’ primary concern remained the team’s performance. And there might be more reasons why fans ignored her. Like in previous outings, Olivia Dunne had actively engaged with the team and fans, wearing a custom jersey and interacting playfully in a game the Devils won. NHL crowds, especially Devils supporters, value the outcome more than anything rather than who’s sitting in the stands.

One more added, “Where is the Tate McRae photo?” Singer Tate McRae attended the Devils game, and her appearance coincided with the return of Devils player Jack Hughes, who had been out with an illness. Fans seemed to take her appearance as further proof of the dating rumors between McRae and Hughes.

Another fan added, “Literally the most irrelevant post I’ve seen today.” One more added, “You guys are so bad 😂😂.” Another added, “lol devils aren’t good 😂.”

The Devils started out well when Jack Hughes opened the scoring at 8:51 in the first period with a clean snap shot, putting New Jersey ahead 1-0,  particularly important because it was his first appearance in 18 months since undergoing surgery on his finger.

The tide, however, soon turned. The Sabres were very strong in the second period: using his fourth goal of the season, Josh Norris managed to draw the game at 1-1. Soon, Zach Benson scored a goal to put Buffalo ahead at 16:05, defeating Devils goalie Jake Allen to score 2-1. It was over in the third period when Peyton Krebs broke through with an empty-net goal towards the end of the frame that sealed a 3-1 game in favor of Buffalo.
