Behind the medals and the applause, gymnastics is a world of unrelenting pressure. Every movement is measured, every flaw magnified. Camelia Voinea once captivated the world with her flawless floor routines, yet whispers now tell of a harsher side behind the gold. In a sport that prizes perfection, what happens when the pursuit of excellence becomes something more sinister? A former Voinea student reveals her story.

In a recent interview with Golazo.Ro, a former gymnast, who chose to remain anonymous, opened up about her harrowing experience under Camelia Voinea’s supervision. She revealed that even years later, the fear still lingers. “I’m afraid of Camelia Voinea even now. I’m 28 years old, I went abroad, and maybe people will laugh, but I’m still afraid of her. I was so traumatized.”

The anonymous gymnast fondly recalled how her journey began at just four and a half years old. Inspired by the legendary performances of Andreea Răducan, Maria Olaru, and Simona Amnar in 2001, she begged her parents to enroll her in gymnastics classes, an early passion that eventually led her to train under the guidance of the renowned Mrs. Camelia Voinea.

With boundless enthusiasm, the young gymnast embarked on her training, never imagining that her passion would soon turn into a lifelong trauma. Her words weave a chilling tapestry of awe and fear, “After 8 years of ordeal, at the age of 12, I didn’t want to go to gymnastics anymore. What was the reason? Camelia Voinea. We were traumatized because she had become very violent with us, increasingly violent.”

She further added, “And I had an accident too. Mrs. Voinea wasn’t paying attention to me, and I got hurt pretty badly. That’s how I got scared of that machine.. I don’t want you to mention what device, because they’ll figure out who I am. And, I told you, I’m scared…” Years have passed, yet the scars remain raw, so much so that even the slightest mention of that moment still strikes fear in her heart.

But her suffering didn’t end there. When questioned about the timeline of the abuse, the anonymous gymnast revealed how things took a darker turn within the team. She explained that everything had seemed normal until competition season began. “The ordeal began. Insults at every turn, verbal aggression, screaming. But that wasn’t the worst part.” What followed, she hinted, scarred her far beyond the physical pain.

“She had gotten a whip,” said the Anonymous Gymnast about Camelia Voinea

Though Romania’s golden era of gymnastics under Béla and Márta Károlyi had long faded by the 2000s, the sport’s dark undercurrent of abuse still ran deep. Verbal assaults were only the beginning; the real torment began when Voinea allegedly turned to physical punishment. “She had gotten a whip, I don’t know (from) where. It was made of rubber or something similar. If you didn’t do an element well, Pac!, she would hit you with the whip on your legs or hands,” recalled the anonymous gymnast.

With bruises and cuts, the gymnasts still had to deliver perfect execution of the exercises or another slash follows, “We were 8, 9, 10 years old and I still remember those blows… like it was yesterday.. I had bruises, especially on my legs.” When asked if she had ever endured anything more brutal, the gymnast paused before admitting that she considers herself lucky; apart from this, she had faced nothing else. Yet, the question itself seemed to reopen old wounds.

One might wonder why the gymnasts didn’t speak up at home. Voinea ensured they had no voice of their own,” I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t rest, I was shaking out of the blue. I was always afraid. She threatened us that if we said anything at home, it would be even worse.” And even if any of them complained to their parents, Voinea knew exactly how to handle the situation. “One of my colleagues told her mother and she came to the gym to talk to Camelia. She told her mother that ‘I only slapped her once, just a little bit. She was very good at hiding what was happening to us at the gym,” said the gymnast.

These are just a few highlights from the extensive list of complaints the anonymous gymnast leveled against Camelia Voinea, making some truly shocking claims. We sincerely hope that time can heal the wounds of the past, no matter how deep.
