The Miami Dolphins have enjoyed a relatively successful season this year, given their recent track record. With the team barely missing the Playoffs this season, there is a lot of hope surrounding the franchise for an even better performance in 2021. 

Head Coach Brian Flores has done wonders down in Miami. In what is his second season with the franchise, Flores has turned the Dolphins into genuine playoff contenders. But there’s still work that needs to be done.

And the 2021 NFL Draft might just be the place for the Miami Dolphins to take the next step up. With the 3rd overall pick, courtesy of the Houston Texans as part of a deal involving the trade of O-linesman Laremy Tunsil back in 2019, the Dolphins can pick from the cream of the crop. 

Apart from that, the side has the 18th overall pick as well. But all eyes will primarily be on whom the Dolphins will rope in with their 3rd pick.

DeVonta Smith, a lethal weapon to add to the arsenal

Alabama’s DeVonta Smith recently made history by becoming the first wide receiver to win the prestigious Heisman Trophy since 1991. 

With over 1,800 yards and 23 touchdowns under his belt this season, the wide receiver has been a crucial cog in the Alabama unit that steamrolled its way to another National Championship title by beating the Ohio State Buckeyes 52-24.  

Smith’s ability to make plays out of thin air is what makes him rank so highly in the 2021 Draft Class. With multiple 200+ yard games under his belt against top national sides, Smith is also a yardage machine. 

In the National Championship game against the Buckeyes, Smith registered 215 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns in one half.

DeVonta Smith could’ve very well broken multiple records on the night had it not been for a dislocated finger that forced him to the sidelines for the rest of the game.

The Miami Dolphins have a future quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa. But for the quarterback to really shine, he needs playmakers like Smith around him to take this side to the next level.

Miami Dolphins could use an Offensive Tackle

The Dolphins will have a decision to make. Rake in more offensive weapons for Tua or offer him the pass protection he needs to make more well-informed decisions in the pocket. 

If it’s the latter that the Miami Dolphins opt for, then they should look no further than Oregon’s Penei Sewell. A unanimous All-American in 2019, the offensive tackle decided to opt-out for the 2020 college season due to the COVID outbreak. 

But that hasn’t affected his draft stock one bit. Declaring early for the 2021 NFL Draft, Sewell is high on the wishlist of multiple franchises. 

Regarded by several scouts as the best overall talent headed into the draft, Sewell would do wonders to a Dolphins O-Line that still needs work despite drafting in players like Austin Jackson, Robert Hunt, and Solomon Kindley.
