Dick Vermeil, coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV, was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Thursday. He will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, on Saturday, August 6.

Philadelphia Eagles CEO and Chairman said in a statement: “Congratulations to Dick Vermeil on his well-deserved selection into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During his seven seasons in Philadelphia, Dick elevated the standard for success for this franchise and led the organization to its first Super Bowl appearance………. We could not be prouder of Dick, and we look forward to celebrating this tremendous occasion with him and his family in Canton.”
The Dick Vermeil Legacy
Vermeil served for 15 seasons as a head coach in the NFL. After coming from UCLA, Vermeil joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 1976. The first two seasons with the Eagles weren’t particularly enjoyable. Eventually, after two years, in 1978, the Eagles made the playoffs for the first time in 18 years. Finally, he led the Eagles to the Super Bowl XV in 1981.
Unfortunately, the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl XV. However, after a string of tough seasons, Vermeil retired from the Eagles in 1983. In spite of that, he played a crucial role in the Eagles’ history when they were struggling to gain traction. As a result, he introduced a winning culture to this team.
In the 15 years that followed, Vermeil worked as a sports announcer for CBS and ABC. Vermeil returned to coaching in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams in 1997. Vermeil led the Rams to the Super Bowl in 1999 after two abysmal seasons with them. The Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV, and Vermeil was named Coach of the Year for the second time. Yet again, Vermeil announced his retirement following the Rams victory. In 2001, however, he signed again with the Kansa City Chiefs.
While he was unable to lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl, he made extensive improvements to the team’s offense and defense. As a result, after being one of the worst in the league, by 2005 the Chiefs were totally the opposite of what they were. After a phenomenal career in the league, he finally retired in 2005. Dick Vermeil will finally be enshrined in Canton in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
