Over the last three years, the University of Oklahoma has given the NFL a host of young stars. Much of the credit is down to head coach Lincoln Riley. The seasoned college football coach is just 36 years old. Still, he has developed a reputation as the ‘quarterback whisperer’. Riley was given that nickname after two of his starting quarterbacks won back-to-back Heisman Trophies in 2017 and 2018. Baker Mayfield was the first OSU player under Riley to win the Heisman Trophy. Subsequently, Mayfield also became the number one draft pick in the 2018 NFL draft. He joined the Cleveland Browns and signed a rookie contract.

The following year, dual-threat quarterback Kyler Murray bagged the coveted Heisman Trophy. Murray followed Mayfield’s footsteps as he was also drafted as the number one pick in the 2019 NFL draft process. Murray was also part of the MLB draft and was picked in the first round. However, he opted to join the NFL instead.

Murray said, “That’s my boy, to be honest. I mean, just spending the amount of time that I spent with him at OU, having to sit behind him, it was frustrating but at the same time we competed every single day. I think that it got both of us better for sure. You know, in the draft process, I leaned on him a lot just because he’s already been through it. You know, he’s always been great to me. He’s like family to me. A lot of people are talking down on my boy, but I’ve got him coming back with a vengeance for sure.”

“I mean, I know the guy and I know the type of work ethic he has. He loves the game and I’m excited for him this year,” Murray said while talking to Michael Vick.

Mayfield had a decent rookie year with the Browns. However, his form significantly dropped in 2019. Let’s hope that new coach Kevin Stefanski will help Mayfield return to his destructive best. The Browns open their 2020 NFL campaign with a tough clash against Lamar Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens on September 14, 2020.
