But the ceremony turned into much more than a celebration of his legendary career. From Brady’s special appearance and Gronk’s heartfelt tribute to Bill Belichick to hilarious behind-the-scenes stories and Rob Ninkovich’s bold take on the Travis Kelce debate, the occasion delivered plenty of memorable moments. Here’s everything that made Gronk’s special day unforgettable.
Rob Gronkowski makes his feelings for New England clear
Some players move on after leaving a team. But Gronkowski has never hidden his love for New England. Even after retiring and starting his broadcasting career, he has remained close to the Patriots and their fans.
“I’m a Patriot for life. Nothing, and no one, is ever matching what we did over the run we had. No one. New England will always be home, and I will always love you guys. Thank you,” Gronkowski said.
Gronkowski was not just another player on those championship teams. Alongside Brady, he became one of the biggest reasons why New England’s offense was so difficult to stop.
Years after leaving the team, Gronkowski still feels the same way about the Patriots. His words made that clear.
Tom Brady’s presence makes the occasion even more special
If there was one person Gronkowski wanted to see at his induction ceremony, it was his longtime quarterback and close friend, Tom Brady. And the seven-time Super Bowl champion made sure he was there for the big day.
Brady attended the ceremony in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where Patriots fans gave him a huge welcome. He was already in town as part of FOX’s broadcast team for Sunday’s Patriots-Packers game.
“It meant everything… He wanted to be here. It just meant a lot, man. Tom can be anywhere else. He’s the greatest player of all time. It just meant a lot to myself, my family, and to the fans, I’m sure as well,” Gronkowski said.
During his speech, the former tight end also spoke about everything he learned from playing alongside Brady.
“I saw how Tom worked, I saw what it took to be great, and I wanted to be at that level,” Gronkowski said, as reported by Boston.com.
Interestingly, Brady did not take the microphone during the ceremony. He allowed the day to remain all about Gronkowski. But his presence alone made the occasion even more memorable.
Gronkowski gives Bill Belichick his flowers
Tom Brady was not the only Patriots legend Gronkowski wanted to thank. His former head coach, Bill Belichick, also received a special mention during the ceremony.
The two shared an important relationship during New England’s championship years. Belichick brought Gronkowski to the Patriots in the 2010 NFL Draft. The team selected him in the second round with the 42nd overall pick.
During his speech, Gronkowski said, “The greatest of all time, no question about it… Thank you for doing whatever you felt necessary to get me to play at a high level. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to put our teams in the best possible situations. And thank you for drafting this so-called a-hole who would only talk about hot tubs on his pre-draft visits.”
The final part brought some classic Gronkowski humor to an emotional speech. His hot tub comment also reminded everyone of the fun-loving personality that made him such a popular figure throughout his career.
After North Carolina’s win over UConn, Belichick also had plenty of good things to say about his former player.
“He came a long, long way from barely playing in college at Arizona, to where he ended up, which was an incredible credit to him, his work ethic, his toughness and his dependability. It’s a hard position to play, but he excelled at it,” Belichick said.
It was a special mutual tribute between two people who played major roles in building the Patriots dynasty.
Rob Ninkovich takes a dig at Travis Kelce during Gronk’s celebration
While most of the ceremony focused on Gronkowski’s achievements, former Patriots linebacker Rob Ninkovich started a separate NFL debate.
Ninkovich played alongside Gronkowski in New England. And when it came to comparing the former Patriots star with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, he had a very clear opinion.
“[Travis] Kelce and [Rob Gronkowski] don’t even come close. He’s a receiver. This guy’s a tight end,” Ninkovich said.
Kelce has made a name for himself as one of the best receiving tight ends in NFL history. Gronkowski, meanwhile, combined his receiving skills with strong blocking and physical play. He could make big catches and also help his team in the running game.
That is the main difference behind Ninkovich’s argument. He believes Gronkowski was a more complete tight end.
Gronk’s funny stories keep the crowd entertained
Of course, a Gronkowski celebration would never be complete without a few funny stories. And the former tight end made sure his Hall of Fame ceremony had plenty of them.
According to Boston.com, Gronkowski shared some interesting details about his pre-draft visit with the Patriots.
“I literally laid my head down on the table and took a nap. Coach [Bill Belichick], I guess, just didn’t understand at the time that’s called recovery, buddy. After that situation, a couple of coaches then drew up a play on the board, erased it, and asked me about the routes. I had no clue. I was tired and hungover, which they still don’t know.”
“So basically, I said, ‘Just throw me the ball. I’ll catch it, and watch what I do.’ They secretly loved it,” Gronkowski said.
Another highlight involved former teammate Matt Light. He gifted Gronkowski a T-shirt that read “Yo Soy Fiesta Hall of Famer.” The shirt was a reference to Gronkowski’s famous “Yo soy fiesta” response during an interview after the 2011 AFC Championship Game.
Even three local Dunkin’ locations joined the celebrations by changing their signs to “Gronkin’” for the weekend.
Gronkowski clearly loved the gesture. He joked, “That’s when you know you’ve made it in New England. That’s one of one. I’m at the top. No one else ever got Dunkin’ Donuts named after them like that.”
It was another reminder of how much the Patriots faithful love their former tight end.
A fitting celebration for a Patriots legend
The ceremony celebrated much more than Gronkowski’s numbers on the field. He spent nine seasons with New England and finished his regular-season Patriots career with 521 receptions, 7,861 receiving yards, and 79 receiving touchdowns. He also won three Super Bowls with the franchise.
Gronkowski became the 38th member of the Patriots Hall of Fame after receiving the most votes from fans. Adam Vinatieri and Logan Mankins were the other finalists.
From Brady’s special appearance to Belichick’s praise and Ninkovich’s bold comparison with Kelce, the ceremony gave fans plenty to celebrate.
But Gronkowski had one final message for the crowd. After reminding everyone that he would always be a Patriot, he ended his speech with the words that perfectly matched his personality: “Now let’s fiesta!”
