The Green Bay Packers have struggled so far this season. As they look to revive their season, the team has added a new weapon to the defensive side. Head coach Matt LaFleur will hope that this new asset helps to solve the team’s recent defensive woes.

The new defensive weapon for the Green Bay Packers

The Packers have added former Las Vegas Raiders safety Johnathan Abram on a waiver from free agency. The Raiders released Abram after they lost against the Jacksonville Jaguars in game week nine. Abraham featured for the Raiders in that game.

The Las Vegas outfit had earlier declined to exercise their fifth-year option on Abram’s contract. That means that he would have become a free agent at the end of the 2022 season. But the parties decided to part ways even before that deadline.

Abram was a regular starter for the Raiders in the previous seasons after they picked him in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft. He made his NFL debut in the week one game against the Denver Broncos that same year. That was the only game he played that year though, as he sustained a shoulder injury. He returned in week one of the 2020 season and registered his first career interception against the New England Patriots. After that breakout season, he became a starter for the Raiders.

The Packers’ woeful season

The Packers need reinforcements as they are going through a slump this season. The team has won just three out of the nine games they have played. And they have lost five straight games after their last win in the league. Both the defense and the offense have failed to dominate.

The team’s two safeties, Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage, have just 56.1 and 47.6 overall grades this season respectively. Their main weapon in the offense, Aaron Rodgers, is also out of form. And it was visible in their defeat against the Detroit Lions in game week nine. Rodgers completed just 23 of his 43 pass attempts in the game. He threw just one touchdown pass for the team. And the Lions’ defense rubbed salt in the wounds by intercepting three of his passes. The Packers lost 15-9, their sixth defeat this season.

The Packers are second on the NFC North divisional table behind the Minnesota Vikings. Winning the division is getting out of reach with every passing game. So, Abram might make his Packers debut against the Dallas Cowboys in game Week 10.
