Former Super Bowl-winning Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning had an instrumental on-screen role during the filming of a popular TV show. The former Broncos QB was portraying the role of Coach Gary during the Season 8 episode of ABC’s Modern Family. Manning got his opportunity to work alongside Sofia Vergara and Ed O’Neill, with the show’s plot taking an intriguing turn.

The episode sees Gloria Pritchett played on-screen by Vergara hiring Manning, i.e. Coach Gary, to teach her son, Joe, to throw a baseball. However, Gloria’s husband, Jay, played by Ed O’Neill, was against his appointment by Gloria. It was an interesting exchange between Gary and Jay. The latter was feeling challenged in his own home by the former’s introduction.

The show’s fans also were excited to have a legendary NFL player like Manning making a guest appearance. His character, Coach Gary, put on a convincing performance and is still remembered by hardcore followers of the show. It also proved to be the first time that the Pro Football Hall of Famer guest-starred in a show other than himself.

While talking about his accolades, Manning’s character mentions ‘leading and winning a championship last year’, paying homage to the Broncos. Manning’s final season in the Mile-High City saw him capture the 2016 Super Bowl title and close out a historic career. It was the culmination of a 17-year NFL career while recording 2,249 passing yards, and 9 TD passes.

While the game has since moved past Manning, the former Broncos QB is still considered one of the great footballing brains.

He continues working with ESPN on ‘Peyton’s Places’ and ‘Details’ while co-hosting Manningcast with his brother, Eli Manning.
