Kansas City Chiefs have clearly had a rollercoaster of a season so far. Patrick Mahomes and Co were once written off, but a recent drubbing of Las Vegas Raiders has seemingly put them back on track. Now, they face a big test in Dallas Cowboys. But ahead of that big fixture, Mahomes had a few words of praise for an unlikely member of his team.

Patrick Mahomes praises Chiefs’ rookie quarterback
Few people are aware of Kansas City Chiefs’ backup quarterbacks. In a situation where Patrick Mahomes goes down with an injury, Chad Henne steps up to take his place. But Mahomes had some special praise for the Chiefs’ second backup QB, rookie Shane Buechele.
“He puts in the work every single day. He’s a guy that has a lot of energy and in that role when you’re not playing that first year, you can kind of lose it and you can kind of be lazy, but he hasn’t shown that. He’s been in every day with us, me and Chad (Henne), getting in and learning as much as possible.”

Mahomes even confessed he had to keep Arizona Cardinals at bay, preventing them from poaching Buechele. “I had to tell Kliff (Kingsbury) to stay away from my guy. But he’s someone who puts in the work and deserves this opportunity and I’m happy for him.” These are mighty strong words of praise from one of the best players in the league.

In the preseason, Buechele played one game where he absolutely trounced San Francisco 49ers. Whenever they’d try to get out of the gates, the rookie would pull them back and keep them behind the lead. He hasn’t received a chance to start during the regular season yet, but the praise he’s received from Mahomes goes a long way in making that dream come true.
Who is Shane Buechele?
Apart from playing in preseason, we don’t know much about Kansas City Chiefs’ rookie quarterback. Hailing from Arlington, Texas, Buechele graduated from Southern Methodist University, but his quarterback wings sprouted when he played for Texas Longhorns.
Once the most feared college football team in the world, the Longhorns had a decent season with Buechele at quarterback. During his stint there, he threw 21 TD passes in his first season, following which his form dropped. When he graduated from the University of Texas, he transferred to SMU, where he played for the Mustangs.
For the Mustangs, Buechele had another killer debut season, throwing 34 TD passes and scoring two rushing. In 2020, he threw 23 TD passes, and the following year he was in the NFL, representing the former Super Bowl Champions.
