The Dallas Cowboys have been long waiting for a Super Bowl. After Jimmy Johnson helped the Cowboys taste success in the 90s, the team has starved for another ring since then. Observers believe that the reason lies in the way Jerry Jones and his son, Stephen Jones, run the Cowboys.

The wider criticism of Stephen Jones’ tactics is that he refrains from focusing on saving cap space to build a robust roster. Moreover, the Cowboys’ weak cavalry around their quarterback is evident from past instances. In the 14-year career of Cowboys’ QB Tony Romo, he was hung out to dry because of less cap space.

In addition, the same is happening with the star QB, Dak Prescott. It seems like the Cowboys play like a rookie team when Prescott is not there to hold their nerves. For instance, Prescott’s absence in the first preseason game of 2022 led to a humiliating 17-7 defeat at the hands of the Broncos.

Both Romo and Prescott rank among the top in quarterback ratings, but have failed to get the Cowboys over the line in big games. In total, the rating index has 54 quarterbacks in its sample size and they’re ranked by how much each quarterback was hung out to dry. Tony Romo was ranked third whereas Prescott finished at 13th.

Jerry and Stephen Jones’ influence on the Dallas Cowboys and the careers of their QBs

The Jones have played a big role in squeezing the cap space that leads to building a weak cavalry. Romo has a 32-20 overall mark over the past decade. Moreover, only Mahomes, Brady, Manning, and Luck had better win rates over the past decade, which shows Romo’s prowess.

Dak Prescott’s career has been more competitive and exciting considering his Cowboys have been largely competitive. Interestingly, Prescott finished with a losing record only in the 2020 season when he only played five games.

All in all, the Jones have been often called out for limiting the cap space which leads to betraying their quarterbacks. Look at Brady and Mahomes always having a strong lineup around them to support their wins in big games. Maybe the Cowboys have something to learn in the long run.
