Doctors treating Brown revealed that he was suffering from a serious case of frostbite on his feet. It has resulted in the skin sloughing off his feet, looking like fish scales. Further, doctors alarmed him about the side effects of using the new form of physiotherapy that led to this feet condition.

Brown sought treatment for his feet and was able to get them back to normal. But the former Raiders‘ WR was not the only athlete facing the side effect and there is a reason behind it.

What caused the frostbite to Antonio Brown?

The physiotherapy that causes the fish skin condition is whole body cryotherapy. It is a supplement to traditional ice baths. The therapy includes standing in a sealed room and being subjected to extremely cold, dry air. For about 2 to 3 minutes, the air pours in. The temperature is usually very low.

It is widely popular in Japan and is recently being used to treat the injuries of athletes. It heals their muscle sprains and minor tears sustained while playing on the field. However, exposing the body to such low temperatures and dry air causes it to react differently.

Although Brown recovered from the injury, the cryotherapy used prompted careful usage amongst athletes. While more precaution is being taken now, back then, it caused a very ugly condition to the Buccaneers‘ WR’s feet.
