Jon Gruden returned to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018 with a clear mindset. He came to lead this team back to the Super Bowl.

The Raiders had quarterback Derek Carr on their roster, a former 1st overall pick. They also brought in 2014 Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota last year.

However, the Las Vegas-based franchise could only manage a 2nd-placed finish in the AFC West behind the Kansas City Chiefs.

Under the tutelage of Gruden, the Raiders concluded their campaign with an 8-8 record. They own the 17th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

However, they might be tempted to trade up in order to draft a young quarterback this summer.

2021 NFL Draft

Will the Las Vegas Raiders draft a quarterback in the 1st round?

Speaking to Patrick Meagher earlier this week, former New England Patriots executive Michael Lombardi suggested that Jon Gruden and Co. will be assessing their options before the draft starts on April 29, 2021.

“He needs somebody who’s going to stand up to him, but nobody’s gonna stand up to him. Nope, not his assistant coaches. They’re not gonna stand up to him.

“And this conversation about a quarterback, it’s really about what do we want to pay? Everybody focuses on do they want to replace Carr?…. if he doesn’t want to do that, then this is the year to draft the quarterback, to redshirt him.

“Lock Carr as your starter and then get that guy ready to go. And I think it’s probably really smart on the Raiders’ part to spend a lot of time evaluating the quarterback position so that they’re comfortable.

“Do they like Trey lance? Maybe he slips to eight or nine maybe he if he gets there, then you know they call Carolina or call Denver or call one of those teams,” Lombardi said on the show.

Trey Lance could certainly be the perfect candidate to take over from Carr for the Raiders. The NDSU quarterback missed the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 crisis. However, he is still regarded as one of the most exciting quarterback prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft.

But it will be a difficult task to trade up, especially with not much time remaining on the clock. If the Raiders want to make a move, they need to do so n0w!
