Jim Harbaugh truly knows how to write stories differently and this is one of the reasons why a lot of people who worked with him stand in awe of him. Before his arrival as the HC at the University of San Diego in 2004, the Toreros defeated their biggest rival, the University of Dayton, just once since entering the Pioneer Football League in 1993.

In his first season as HC, Jim Harbaugh rewrote San Diego’s history by winning his first matchup against Dayton. Former Los Angeles Chargers LB Eric Bakhtiari who was the then QB for San Deigo crushed their rival QB Brandon Staley, whom Jim Harbaugh recently replaced as the Chargers HC. The team then went on to have a successful rivalry stint under their new HC. But how?

Jim Harbaugh adds a thriller with a flag

The first rivalry win hyped Jim Harbaugh who got creative and secured a two-colored rivalry flag, red for Dayton and blue for San Diego, without consulting the rival team. Bakhtiari said, “It was cool, man, he artificially created this trophy game, but it got us all pumped up. We were all about that flag.” The plan was to fight for the flag and add the final score to the flag after each meeting, intensifying the spirit of rivalry.

In the year that followed, Harbaugh’s team won again 48-24. Even in the next season’s matchup, San Diego triumphed over Dayton. The team faced their first defeat after three back-to-back victories when Jim Harbaugh left after three seasons. When Dayton won, Bakhtiari recalled that their rival team ripped the flag off of their sidelines. He said, “And I think [the flag] is like in someone’s garage now. They never end up playing for it again. They were so mad. As for Harbaugh, the years that followed were met with equal success wherever he went.
