Every football player experiences intense emotions when they meet their opponents on the field. That being said, every human being is different. So, while some channel these emotions to temper, some turn to what happens when the pain is too much to bear—crying.

Caleb Williams, a player of immense resilience, entered the 2023 season as a formidable force, having clinched the 2022 Heisman Trophy. However, when the season didn’t unfold as he had hoped, he faced a wave of intense sadness. This emotional rollercoaster, which saw him shed tears after a loss against the Washington Huskies, was a testament to his human side, which resonates with every football fan.

Caleb Williams’ emotions are only human

In a YouTube episode on ESPN Chicago, Waddle and Silvy join forces to discuss Caleb Williams, the projected No. 1 pick for the Chicago Bears. In the video, Marc Silverman defends the 22-year-old’s emotional breakdown when he cried as the Trojans lost the game to the Washington Huskies. He says, “Many of the college players in the NCAA Tournament this year, when they got eliminated, cried. [Caleb Williams is] a college kid.”

Silverman explained that even the players from the pro league get upset and display their emotions in various forms when the game doesn’t go as planned. He took the instance of Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce, who bumped his HC Andy Reid on the sidelines during their Super Bowl game against the San Francisco 49ers. In the Trojans-Huskies game, Caleb Williams completed 27 of 35 for 312 yards with three TDs, including a rushing touchdown without any interceptions. While it was a tremendous play on his part, they still lost 42-52, which is enough to upset anyone if they had put their heart and soul into the game. And for a serious player like the projected No. 1 NFL pick, it mattered. 

Caleb Williams’ abilities win appreciation 

Now that the past is gone, we can look toward the future, and one thing is sure — Caleb Williams has a bright future in the NFL. As The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman reported, Williams’ improvisation ability even garnered praise from a rival coach who said of him, “That kid is [a] magician. He just pulls stuff out of his a**. That program (USC) was in disarray. Without Caleb (last year), I think they go 4-8 easy. I think he is phenomenal. He’s extremely accurate off of his back foot, and on the run.”

Caleb Williams’ average throw time is 3.21 seconds. PFF’s Trevor Sikkema reported that he has the longest average throw time of any first-round quarterback since 2018. Just three weeks remain before he potentially becomes the new face of the Bears.
