Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton has finally spoken about the cancellation of BET’s 106 & Sports this week. A mix of sports and culture, the project originally aired in October 2025 with Newton and Ashley Nicole Moss as the leading faces. He explained his stake and how he learned about the sudden news. Much like viewers, it caught the Carolina Panthers legend completely off guard. But with that chapter closed, the former MVP is already redirecting his focus and funds into a new nationwide venture.

“When the show got sent to me, and I went through it, I said, okay, this [is] the hot topic. This is the first step. Hold on. What? We want it done,” Newton said on the 4th&1 with Cam Newton, referring to the mail that confirmed the show’s cancellation. “Oh my goodness. I said, I thought we were going, I thought we had chemistry, I thought we had an understanding. I thought we were locked in.”

He went on to say, “It’s unfortunate, though. That’s how I found out. Dang. I found out when you sent the show. And how it typically works, you typically send a show the day before. These are the topics that we are thinking about. I was completely taken aback. Clenched pearls.”

In a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, BET confirmed that it will not renew 106 & Sports for a second season. A sports-focused spin-off of the 14-season countdown show 106 & Park, the series ran for eight episodes from October to December 2025. Before explaining how he learned of the show’s fate, Newton clarified on his podcast that it was never his show.

While he served as an on-air talent, the former quarterback revealed he didn’t own the program. Yet, he took great pride in the collaboration, describing the project as “something so prestigious, so iconic, something so cultural, and black with the 106 name.” Unfortunately, he learned about the show’s cancellation while he was preparing content for his podcast late at night. 

The decision to cancel the show comes during a period of broader leadership changes and evolving programming strategy at BET. The series was produced by The SpringHill Company, founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter.

Meanwhile, the show was filmed at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Despite its short run, it featured candid conversations with several sports figures, including LiAngelo Ball, Brittney Griner, Claressa Shields, and Chad Johnson.

While there won’t be another season, previous episodes will continue to be available across BET platforms. With this chapter closed, Cam Newton is already thinking about the next step in his career.

Cam Newton plans nationwide college tailgate tour

Cam Newton first gained a spotlight beyond football in 2016 while hosting the reality show All In with Cam Newton. In the years following his final NFL stint with the Panthers, he gradually transitioned into media, making appearances as a football analyst on ESPN’s First Take while expanding his presence across digital platforms.

Alongside his television work, Newton launched his own podcast, 4th&1 with Cam Newton, in early 2024. The former signal caller has been delivering football breakdowns and commentary on the NFL, college football, and pop culture. When asked what direction his personal project might take in the near future, Newton revealed some major plans.

“In the fall of 2026, I’m going to take every nickel, penny, dime, dollar that was given to me on this project. “I’m going to reinvest it with the 4th&1 with Cam Newton College tailgate,” he said. “When you have the backing of Iconic Saga, when you have the backing of producers like yourself with people that share the vision of what you want, it’s HBCUs, it’s PWIs, it’s colleges around the nation and universities around the nation that we’re able to go on campus and garner their culture.”

Newton emphasized that his goal is authenticity, not perfection. He said every campus he has visited has shown him love. He also believes real-life interaction carries more weight than “thumb thugs” (online critics). For him, success means sparking genuine emotions, be it laughter or debate. Cam Newton’s passion shows that a minor setback won’t prevent him from achieving his grand plans.
