Whatever Broncos legend John Elway had won or achieved in his life, there was one man who played a massive role in all of it. Jeff Sperbeck started representing Elway halfway through his 16-year career in the NFL. The latter of which saw Elway win two Super Bowl titles, all with the Broncos. And once he was done with his Hall of Fame career, Sperbeck never left his side. Whether it was as GM, executive vice president, or even a consultant, Sperbeck managed everything about Elway. He may have served more than 100 NFL players, but to Elway, he was not just an agent. Sperbeck was his family, his close friend, until a tragic accident took him away from everyone, leaving a lot of questions unanswered.

Sperbeck apparently fell off a gold cart on Saturday and suffered a severe head injury. A 911 call was reportedly made from the 53200 block of Humboldt Blvd in La Quinta. Despite emergency personnel arriving in time and taking Sperbeck to the nearby Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, he later succumbed to his injuries. On Wednesday, it was reported that Sperbeck, 62, died despite being on life support. Later, TMZ reported that it was Elway who was driving the golf cart. When both he and Sperbeck left an after-party at the Stagecoach music festival.

They also added that there were no indications of Elway driving inadequately, which led to Sperbeck falling off the moving golf cart. Still, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office was brought in to investigate the matter. However, it was not until Monday that the sheriff’s office was notified. On Friday, almost a week later, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco released a statement saying, “This appears to be a horrific accident. And unfortunately for all of those involved, one of the people well, a couple of them happen to be very high-profile celebrities. And that makes this more of an issue than it probably should be.”

Following this statement, John Elway’s lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, also stated via ESPN, “This has been a terrible time for everyone involved, and our hearts continue to go out to the Sperbeck family. As John grieves this unimaginable loss, we appreciate the efforts of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.” Steinberg went on to refer back to Bianco’s statement to the Denver Post, adding, “The investigation has confirmed what we already knew: this was a tragic accident, and sometimes things happen in life that we will never comprehend.”

Moments after Jeff’s tragic news of passing came to light, John Elway issued an emotional statement showing how deeply saddened he was to lose his 35-year-old friendship to a sudden accident.

Aside from managing Elway during his time with the Broncos, Jeff Sperbeck also looked after his thriving business empire. From restaurants, car dealerships, to wineries, Sperbeck was involved in everything and anything related to Elway. The two even managed to collaborate with renowned winemaker Rob Mondavi in 2015, which allowed them to co-found 7Cellars. Besides those ventures, Sperbeck was also deeply involved with a sports marketing firm, Sullivan and Sperbeck, which he co-founded. He even served as The NOVO Agency’s CEO, representing loads of current and retired NFL players.

Although it later merged with Rep1 Sports in 2018, Sperbeck’s career as an agent and business adviser spanned over 3 decades. So, given that he was largely involved with establishing Elway’s name, the moment the news of his passing came. Elway was quick to express his condolences. He released a statement on Wednesday that read, “I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner, and agent Jeff Sperbeck. There are no words to truly express the profound sadness. I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.”

Elway even went on to send his deepest sympathy to Sperbeck’s family during this tough time. “My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, Cori. His children Carly, Sam, and Jackson. And everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship, and love. He brought into my life and the lives of so many others.” Not just Elway—the whole NFL community is mourning the loss of Sperbeck. His impact behind the scenes helped carve a Hall of Fame career for Elway. Meanwhile, those younger agents surely learned a lot from Sperbeck’s time as an agent.
