- Former NFL QB reveals how his relaxing day off in Fiji turned life-threatening.
- Beach adventures for the popular host don't just stop there.
- From NFL quarterback to media personality, his career is shaped by discipline, unexpected risks, and a life far from the field.
As a child, Jesse Palmer would often wander into his parents’ closet, rifling through boxes of old uniforms from his dad, Bill’s, playing days in the Canadian Football League. That’s how the young boy in a hockey-crazed Ontario, Canada, grew up wanting to play professional football. And until the New York Giants selected him in the 2001 NFL Draft, his life had only been about the sport. But the Big Apple was a culture shock to him in many ways.

So much so that in 2004, he got a call to contest on Season 5 of The Bachelor. Fast forward to now, and he has become one of the most favorite hosts for the same show. And while he has always maintained the ‘play the next play’ mindset, filming is not always so easy. He learned it himself three years ago when his serene moment in Fiji with some Rosé and the 2023 NFL Draft turned chaotic.
“I almost died in Fiji,” Palmer said Wednesday while talking to Parade about his time with the show.

“Charity [Lawson] and Dotun [Olubeko] had this amazing one-on-one date on this secluded little island in the middle of the water. I watched them on their date and thought about how I’d love to just go out there by myself and spend a couple hours on that beach when we were done filming.
“So I went out there. But then the storm blew in, and the tide started climbing up onto the beach—to the point where the beach almost got completely covered by the ocean. I’m just out in the middle of the ocean, and there’s nothing there. And I thought to myself, I’m just going to have to tread water and hope a boat comes by and picks me up.”
Palmer had an afternoon off right after shooting that particular episode. So, he took a boat to a secluded sandbar where the show had staged the date a day before. Amid the quietness, he enjoyed his rosé while lounging and watching the NFL Draft on his phone. But the plans changed quickly as the weather turned on him.

“I did have some bad thoughts for a moment,” he added. “Like, this is so crazy and ironic if this is how it ends.”
But if he were to go that day, Palmer actually didn’t mind it.

“A great bottle of rosé and the NFL Draft? In Fiji?” Palmer said after a couple of months, able to laugh about it, seated safely poolside at a Los Angeles hotel. “I guess if I had to go, that’s not too bad.”
That Season 20 shoot was just another chapter to his ongoing adventure. And even though he almost died then and got bitten by a dog elsewhere, his love for the beach and adventures hasn’t ended.

Jesse Palmer had a change of perspective entering New York
Since he was born, Palmer had been around water and in calm and quiet places. He even chose to play in Florida as a collegiate athlete. But being drafted by the Giants was a drastic contrast for him. The city’s buzzing and dynamic lifestyle helped him explore the world out there.
He would walk the neighborhoods and boroughs, learning about the history and architecture. When that was done, after his rookie season with the Giants, he went on a month-long solo trip across Europe — Paris, Budapest, Stockholm, all over — unlocking highbrow interests in food and fashion. That, in itself, opened another door for him: as a food analyst.

“I became more curious, more confident,” says Palmer. “My whole life to that point was football, and the sport completely orchestrated my emotions. Now I’m traveling to all these places and living in this city that is a mecca of food and culture. It opened up a lot of my other passions.”

He aptly inherited his parents’ “say yes” mentality and did not let any opportunity become a what-if. Then, he met his wife, Emely Fardo, a Brazilian model, at a Rumble Boxing class in NYC. Fardo, too, never stopped Palmer from living his life to the fullest. In fact, she enjoys it all with him.
The two recently celebrated their daughter’s birthday beachside, taking in the same waves that could’ve once ironically ended his life. But
That way of doing things still affects his daily life. The former quarterback gets ready for the next game as if it were still Sunday. But now, he’s doing more than just analyzing football. He’s working on a lot of different projects that help him stay on track after the NFL.

Jesse Palmer’s broadcasting grind shaped his post-NFL identity
As Palmer settled into life after football, he quickly realized broadcasting demanded a different kind of discipline. In a 2020 chat with Faces magazine, the former Giants signal caller explained how preparation became everything.
“I learned that in order to fully serve the viewer at home, I was expected to do my homework and offer my own professional opinion,” he said. “It is probably the hardest part about being a broadcaster, but I believe the best generally don’t get caught up in the emotion and don’t make things personal. I’ve always tried to remain impartial and unbiased.”

After appearing on The Bachelor in 2004, he had a short stint back in football with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League in 2006. Not long after that, he dove into the media world, becoming a college football analyst for ESPN and writing columns in Canada. Eventually, he took on a hosting job at Daily Mail TV from 2017 to 2020.
Palmer also kept getting more and more TV time. He stopped working as a news anchor in 2018 to host The Proposal, a dating show made by the makers of The Bachelor. He also became a regular on Food Network’s Holiday Baking Championship and later became a contributor to Good Morning America.
Beyond television, he looked into business ventures, starting the JPalmer collection with Fanatics, and then started his own fashion line.

“It’s actually my brand,” he said. “It still feels weird to say that.”
His career path shows how far he has come since his time with the Giants. His time on The Bachelor gave him a lot of exposure around the world. Palmer is still building a brand that goes beyond football, from ads to hosting gigs. But the Fiji trip would be the one trip that he might consider redoing, but not in the exact manner.
