Firmly believing in his truth and Miami’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ law for self-defense, last year, as Miami-Dade police had an arrest warrant out for him, former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown openly challenged the prosecutor to “Play hard.” And after over ten months of fighting the case, Brown got an offer he could not refuse because of the same person.

Apparently, the man he fired gunshots at recently revealed that he no longer wants to participate in the prosecution despite having a strong case. With a plea deal now, Brown is set to avoid a possible 30-year sentence.

“Former NFL star Antonio Brown has accepted a plea deal that will spare him prison time in his Miami shooting case,” FOX News shared the update on X. “Brown’s attorney says the agreement dramatically reduces the original charge of second-degree m*rd*r and will result in probation instead of a potential 20-to-30-year prison sentence.”

The former player will appear in court on September 30 to accept a deal that will result in probation instead of prison time. It is worth noting that accepting a plea deal does not automatically mean admission of guilt, as his lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, also noted.

“He is not accepting this agreement because he suddenly agrees with the State’s allegations,” Eiglarsh said, per FOX News. “He is accepting it because the State made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

“There is a profound difference between believing you can win a case and deciding that you and your family cannot afford to spend another year, or potentially several years, wearing an ankle monitor and fighting it.”

Earlier this month, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, the alleged victim, released a statement through his lawyer, Richard L. Cooper, that he has forgiven Brown and “does not wish to participate” in his prosecution. Meanwhile, the former NFL player was more than ready to face a jury before accepting the plea deal.

“This was not an easy decision,” Eiglarsh said in the statement. “Antonio believes in his innocence. He believes strongly in his Stand Your Ground defense, and he believes he would ultimately prevail at trial. But when prosecutors put an offer on the table that transforms a potential decades-long prison sentence into a significantly reduced charge and probation, there was simply no way he could reasonably turn it down.”

Interestingly, Brown had been too bold to keep “teasing” the police despite an arrest warrant out.

What we know so far

The origin

At a May 16th boxing event last year hosted by popular streamer Adin Ross in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, Brown got into an argument with Nantambu and others. However, after the argument, when the security staff separated the two, Brown reportedly took a handgun from a security staff member to fire two shots at Nantambu. While the latter mentioned one of the bullets grazed past his neck, no one was injured.

Miami Police Department spokesperson Kiara Delva told the USA TODAY Sports Network in 2025 that Miami Police received an alert from ShotSpotter — a gunshot detection system — at approximately 3 a.m. ET the next day. When they reached the location, they detained Brown for a few hours before letting him go. Brown even went to X to clarify whether he was arrested or not.

“I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me,” Brown wrote in a post on X. “Contrary to some video circulating, Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED.”

That freedom didn’t last long, though.

A month after this incident, on July 11th, an arrest warrant was issued against Brown where he was charged with second-degree attempted m*rd*r with a firearm. But just a few days after this warrant was issued, Brown left America.

Through his social media handles, he shared pictures of the Middle East, continued to share similar updates on social media, and even engaged in football narratives surrounding his old team – something he is doing even now.

Brown flew to Dubai to dodge arrest

Cut to November 2025, and Brown was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Dubai, from where he was extradited to New Jersey. After a few days, he was moved to Miami.

Brown eventually pled ‘not guilty’ to the charges against him and was released on a $25,000 bond, while also being ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor.

Eiglarsh prepares his case

In December 2025, Eiglarsh filed a motion to dismiss the case, citing Florida’s “stand your ground” law, which basically allows use of force for self-defense.

Brown was prepared to face a jury that his attorney had previously requested, believing that they would win the case. But with a plea deal to be signed in the coming days, Brown is turning the page over.

What’s next for Antonio Brown

With a hearing date set for September 30 that puts this entire case behind him, Brown wishes to focus on his career and his family. His attorney released a statement with Brown’s promise:

“Antonio is ready to put this behind him, focus on his children, rebuild his professional opportunities, and move forward with his life,” Eiglarsh said in Wednesday’s statement. “He has fought this case for more than ten and a half months. Now, he has an opportunity for something that has become increasingly important to him and his family: closure.”

Now, Antonio Brown awaits the scheduled hearing to officially seal his plea agreement. With that, the legal troubles that have hounded him for more than a year will finally be behind him.
