For the first time, his childhood sweetheart didn’t recognize him, forcing him to confront the disease’s full weight. “She looked at me, and I held her hands. She looked at me and said, ‘Who is this in my bed?’ And that’s when I knew I can’t be in the room anymore, and I had to go to the other room,” Irvin said. The couple met in college and married in 1990.
