Jason Witten spent 16 of his 17 NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. However, in January 2021, the Cowboys tight end wrapped up his NFL career and transitioned into coaching. Witten became the head coach of Liberty Christian School’s football team, and now, years later, the Argyle, Texas-based private school has honored him in a unique way.

“Liberty Christian School is excited to announce the dedication and naming of the football field at Warrior Stadium as the Witten Family Field,” the school captioned an Instagram post. “This honor is for a family whose impact on Liberty Christian School has been felt for more than 15 years. Jason, Michelle, and the entire Witten family embraced a vision that helped strengthen not only Liberty football, but the Warrior community as a whole.”
The honoring ceremony took place on Friday, August 21. Jason Witten, who left the program seven months earlier in January to accept a Division I coaching position as the tight ends coach for the University of Oklahoma Sooners, was invited with his family to watch Liberty Christian face Midland Christian.
It was reportedly a surprise ceremony. Just before the game, Witten walked to the 50-yard line with his wife Michelle and daughters Landry and Hadley, and the school unveiled “Witten” painted along the sidelines while announcing that the stadium itself remains Warrior Stadium, but the playing surface was permanently renamed Witten Family Field.
Shortly after, Witten’s youngest son, Cooper, who plays linebacker for Liberty Christian, joined his family in celebration.
Jason Witten and his family received the honor for different reasons. First, when the former Dallas Cowboys TE transitioned to Liberty Christian as head coach, he initially struggled. But by the end of his five-season stint (2021-2025), Witten had a 44–7 record and secured back-to-back TAPPS State Championships in 2023 and 2024.
Secondly, the Witten family has been a close associate of the school for many years. His eldest son, Christopher Jason (CJ), was a standout two-time TAPPS All-State defensive player under his father at Liberty Christian School, racking up 304 career tackles and leading the team to back-to-back state championships.
Although CJ left the program and joined Rice University last year, Witten’s youngest son, Cooper, is still part of the team and is playing his final senior high school season. Liberty Christian School also noted that the family’s impact reached far beyond football.
“Through their leadership, generosity, relationships, and love for Liberty, they helped make Friday nights a gathering place for students, families, alumni, and friends – a place where Warrior spirit came alive. Thank you, Witten family, for the many ways you have invested in Liberty Christian School and for the lasting legacy your family has helped create,” the school wrote on Instagram.
