Teams are frantically looking for strategies to lock the commitment of All-Pro linebacker Khalil Mack in the upcoming draft. In the latest episode of Chargers Weekly, Chris Hayre, Matt “Money” Smith and Jeremy Fowler came together to decode the Los Angeles Chargers’ option at 5 in the 2024 NFL Draft that will help them to acquire Mack.

With the new coach, Jim Harbaugh at the helm of the team, the high-stakes player hunt will be comprising various strategic moves owing to the financial challenges the Chargers are now dealing with. Armed with calculators and cap space spreadsheets, the Chargers are all set to retain Mack, overcoming their financial challenges.      

Calculative move opens the prospect for Harbaugh

On talking about the present scenario in the Chargers’ players’ roster, Fowler gave a rundown on the craze surrounding the 33-year-old linebacker. Talking about the pursuit of the NFL teams to acquire Mack’s trust, he drew a parallel with another contender in the 2024 Draft, “Some teams have just always had an affinity for him like a missing link piece to like a contending team. Maybe I’ve heard his name more than Joey Bosa. I don’t know if that means anything. I just think Mack’s got some he’s got a market I’d say that.”

The Chargers are amid a financial crunch as they are staggering with $45 million over the salary cap. In such an instance, Mack’s expensive cap hit of approximately $38 million poses yet another hurdle for the Harbaugh squad. It is with certain moves that Harbaugh can make the situation in their favor. 

Firstly, by restructuring veteran center Corey Linsley’s contract, who is et for retirement this summer. By doing so, the Chargers will unlock an additional $2.6 million in cap space. Alternatively, the team can further free up over $20 million by cutting ties with wide receiver Mike Williams, who is recovering from ACL. 

There is another perspective surrounding the possibility of extending veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen. In doing so, Allen’s base salary can be converted into future bonuses that would provide the team with the much-needed flexibility. 

Fowler’s insights on Mack’s unique appeal that make him a unique prospect

Fowler’s analogy of pointing out using Mack as a filler owning to his distinct qualities that will make him a coveted asset for Harbaugh’s Chargers. He proclaimed, “We can make Khalil our Missing Link probably just at a cost. It really depends on what teams would be willing to give up on that scenario and the Chargers as long as they make a few moves.” Since the competition to recruit Mack is high, here are the programs that can reserve Mack.

Among the speculated suitors Mack, the Pittsburgh Steelers emerge as a potential contender. Pairing Mack alongside TJ Watt, will give the Steelers an advantage about owning a formidable edge-rushing duo. On the other hand, the Los Angeles Rams present an intriguing option. Mack could bolster the Rams’ offense by joining forces with Aaron Donald.
