LeBron James is 41, but he still has the power to stun audiences. The Lakers icon will be moving to the Philadelphia 76ers, where he will hopefully earn yet another NBA Championship in the next two seasons.

To some, this move reminded them of Tom Brady’s shocking return from retirement to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“This move by LeBron feels like Brady to Tampa,” NFL analyst Colin Cowherd said on his show. “This is not KD to the Warriors. I mean that the Sixers haven’t won an Eastern Conference Championship in like 25 years. I think only the Hornets and the Wizards have had longer droughts. This is not ring chasing. It’s Tampa, Brady.

“Brady’s like, … ‘I go to a little weaker division so I can stack some wins, you know, in my final couple years.’ … LeBron, similarly.”

The parallels between the career trajectories of the two GOATS are there: both could have had their picks in their respective leagues. The Buccaneers beat out the Los Angeles Chargers for Tom Brady, while the Sixers outshone teams like the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers. They chose to go with teams that struggled.

When Brady signed with Tampa Bay in 2020, the Buccaneers had not made the NFL playoffs for 12 straight seasons. James is joining a Philadelphia 76ers team that has not won an NBA championship since 1983 and has not reached the Eastern Conference Finals since 2001.

Tom Brady left the New England Patriots to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because he believed they gave him a better chance to win. He and the team came together to make that possible, and they won the Super Bowl in the 2021 season. The veteran quarterback also had the help of fellow veterans like Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Lavonte David, and Shaquill Barrett.

James is in a similar situation with the 76ers. Philadelphia already has star players in Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown. As he did in the twilight of his stint with the Lakers (where he also played with his son, Bronny), James will probably act as the X factor and let the younger players lead the charge.

Both had won their respective championships multiple times before signing with these teams. Brady had six Super Bowls from his stint with Tampa Bay, while James won two NBA Championships with the Miami Heat, and one each with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Lakers.

Apart from the fact that they play two different sports, the only other difference is that Brady has hung up his cleats, while James still hasn’t had his fill.

“You’re witnessing the greatest ever and I hope you all appreciate that,” Brady said of the basketball icon earlier this year.

We will have to wait and watch if this career change helps LeBron achieve what he wants in the final stages of his career.
