Looks like the drama surrounding Dak Prescott’s contract ain’t over yet. Remember all that chatter about Prescott wanting a deal and not getting one? Yeah, that tension hasn’t exactly dissipated. On The Carton Show, former NFL star Plaxico Burress dropped a bomb, suggesting Jerry Jones might be getting a little ‘fed up’ with these ongoing contract negotiations.

Burress made a fair point. Talks between Prescott and the Cowboys stalled earlier this year, leaving many wondering if the star QB would even suit up this season. The ex-wideout even questioned Jones’ willingness to keep this young man after a similar standoff with receiver CeeDee Lamb’s contract. 

Don’t hit the panic button just yet. Dallas’ EVP Stephen Jones spilled some major tea on the Scoop City podcast. Listen up, because Jones dropped a dime on the negotiations: “We are optimistic that we’re gonna get [J.J McCarthy and Dak Prescott] done. You know Dak, we’re definitely gonna get him done and he knows that.” Cowboys’ EVP further elaborated that he and Jerry Jones had conversations with Prescott’s agent, Todd France, about keeping the QB.

But there’s a twist: Stephen Jones acknowledges the financial pressure of keeping all these star players happy, referencing the Chiefs’ struggle to retain WR Tyreek Hill. “You know what happens to the team,” Jones said on the podcast. “When you have all these QBs, it is a challenge to keep ‘em all. Like how the Chiefs struggled and weren’t able to keep Tyreek Hill. You have to make some tough choices along the way.”

Is Stephen saying the Cowboys might be in a similar situation to the Chiefs? While Jones assured fans they’re ‘playing Houdini’ to keep Prescott, a repeat of the Chiefs’ situation with Tyreek Hill definitely looks like a possibility. 

Tyreek Hill’s contract drama with the Kansas City Chiefs

Tyreek Hill, a perennial All-Pro with blazing speed and highlight-reel catches, wasn’t shy about his desire for a contract raise. The WR said on his podcast It Needed To Be Said that he wanted a deal somewhere in the ballpark of $25–26 million annually. Kansas City, however, had a different number in mind. They wanted to maintain financial flexibility while keeping Hill. But the Chiefs’ offer couldn’t meet the wideout’s expectations, leading to a public tug-of-war. 

This wasn’t just about Hill’s ego. He’d become a legend in Kansas City, drafted in the later rounds and blossoming into a true difference-maker. The 30-year-old even earned a spot on the 2010 All-Decade team as a kick returner and was a Pro Bowler in every season he played for the Chiefs. Ultimately, the two parties couldn’t agree, so Hill went to Miami. He snagged a four-year, $120 million deal with the Dolphins, becoming the highest-paid WR at $30 million a year. 

This Chiefs and Tyreek Hill situation is a good reminder for other teams. Sometimes, letting go of a star player is all right when the numbers don’t work out.
