Arizona Cardinals fans have been eagerly awaiting the chance to purchase rookie Marvin Harrison Jr.’s jersey since he was selected 4th overall in the NFL draft. However, a strange situation has put those jersey sales on hold.

“Hey Cardinals fans: Currently, Fanatics and other retailers are not able to offer Marvin Harrison Jr. merchandise until he signs a licensing contract with the NFLPA,” Fanatics stated on X. The sportswear giant explained that Harrison’s jerseys and related products will be “immediately available once he signs.”

According to ESPN’s Pat McAfee, it revolves around a previous deal offered to Harrison by Fanatics when he was a sophomore at Ohio State. “What I’ve been told is this is not an NFLPA thing. This revolves around a deal that’s allegedly being pitched to sophomores in college who have a name by a company named Fanatics,” McAfee reported.

He continued, “I guess there was an offer made to Marvin Harrison Jr. whenever he was a sophomore in college, which has happened to a lot of guys, where if you sign an autograph deal, it’s for four years. Marvin Harrison, who doesn’t need the money, said we’re not taking that deal.”

The preliminary NFLPA licensing agreement that would enable Harrison to monetize his name, image, and likeness (NIL) after being selected and before he is officially signed remains unsigned by him. This standoff could have broader implications for future player endorsement deals. In addition to this, Harrison will not be featured in the Madden NFL video game until he signs his group licensing deal.

While most rookies quickly sign to get their merchandise available, Harrison’s camp is using his high draft status to renegotiate the terms, potentially reshaping these licensing contracts moving forward.

In an unconventional move, Harrison also chose to skip participating in the NFL Scouting Combine and his Pro Day workouts. He explained his rationale, saying to NFL Media “Just talking to my dad, we decided what’s best for us: to prepare for the NFL season, not prepare for the combine or pro day or anything like that. So, take our time to do our due diligence.”

Harrison was referring to his father, former Colts great Marvin Harrison, who advised him to “just be yourself” when meeting with teams rather than focus on those pre-draft athletic testing events.

The final colle­ge season of the younger Harrison showcased elite re­ceiving skills, tallying 67 receptions for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns, e­arning the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top re­ceiver. He is the only receiver in Ohio State History to have two 1,000-yard campaign

His skills were evident enough for the Cardinals to make him the first wideout off the board at #4 overall. As Harrison said, “You know, whatever happens, whoever drafts me, I think they’ve done their research, and I’ve talked to them. They understand where my health is, and they know my skills and my skill set.”
