That’s exactly what happened to the Cleveland Browns when cornerback Mike Ford Jr. left the field early against the Steelers. It should have been just another punt turned into a game-altering moment—and now, the team faces the ripple effects of his absence.   

The incident unfolded on the Browns’ opening offensive drive when their punt team lined up to send the ball downfield. Special teams ace Mike Ford Jr. charged downfield, ready to tackle Steelers punt returner Calvin Austin III. But as Ford closed in, he took a direct shot to the head—a collision that immediately drew concern from both sidelines.

Ford headed straight to the medical tent. And within minutes, the Browns tweeted, “Mike Ford Jr. is being evaluated for a head injury.” The tweet confirmed what fans feared. Ford’s day might be over!  

This wasn’t just any injury for the Browns. Ford is a key player on special teams, one of the few who contributes to all four units. Losing him in a game as critical as this could spell trouble! Calvin Austin III’s 11-yard return on the play put Pittsburgh in prime scoring range, though the Browns’ defense managed to hold them to a field goal.

Ford’s absence leaves a glaring hole in a unit already underperforming! Even special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone has to work something out. “Every player matters on the football field, even special teams players.” This injury proves that point painfully well.

Special teams chaos: Who fills the void?

The visual of Ford jogging toward the locker room after his evaluation provided a flicker of hope, but his status remains uncertain. With concussion protocols in play, it’s unlikely the Browns will rush him back—a cautious approach that aligns with NFL safety standards.  

For a unit that’s been lackluster all season, the loss of Mike Ford Jr. is a tough pill to swallow. Ventrone’s special teams have already struggled with energy and execution. And Ford’s injury only exacerbates those problems! So, replacing Ford’s versatility is definitely no simple feat. His role as a gunner is one of the most physically demanding positions on special teams! And it is not easily replicated. His ability to cover punts, block on returns, and contribute to kickoffs- that’s what made him invaluable.

The play that injured Ford? Yeah, that also served as a microcosm of the Browns’ special teams woes! Austin’s modest 11-yard return seemed harmless. And yet, it set up Pittsburgh in scoring range. 

The road ahead will be challenging for Ventrone. It is essential to find someone who can fill Ford’s shoes. And on top of that, he needs to energize a group that’s been flat. And Mike Ford Jr.’s injury has made it worse. Yikes.
