In 2018, Smith took his case to the courts, pleading before a judge to cut down on his child support obligations because maintaining them while being suspended was simply impossible, NBC reported. The original order, put in place in 2013, required him to pay $9,007 per month for his son, who was around five years old at the time. By 2018, he had fallen nearly $79,000 behind.

“I have had no income since November 2015,” Smith stated in court documents. “I have done my best to stay current, but without an income, I have fallen behind.”

Beyond what came out during that legal case, very little is known about his son.

Smith’s story remains one of the NFL’s most heartbreaking, a generational talent whose off-field struggles never allowed him to fully realize what he was capable of.
