In the 2024 NFC Championship, with Nick Sirianni’s Eagles poised to execute their signature “tush push” at the 1-yard line, Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu attempted a bold countermeasure. The LB launched over the line like he was chasing a gold medal, not Jalen Hurts. The problem is, the refs weren’t buying it. Three encroachment flags later, the Commanders were backed up and out of options.

Even the ref basically said, “Do it again, and we’re handing them a touchdown.” The result? Hurts punched it in, and Philly kept rolling to a 55-23 beatdown. But let’s be real—tush push is exciting, no doubt. So it is risky. And it has divided the NFL into two halves. Some believe that the NFL should ban it, while others support this infamous play. And in a matter of days, the league will finally decide whether to keep it or ban it. The kicker?

Well, the Commanders’ LB just gave his verdict on Tush-Push’s fate ahead of the final decision from the league. And yeah, the 28-year-old LB wants Roger Goodell and Co. to ban the infamous play. “Man, my personal opinion, I think they should ban it,” he told Kyle Brandt of Good Morning Football when asked if tush-push is unfair, and the league should ban it.

“But, I know the argument is going to be about, like, ‘hey, you guys have to stop it, don’t get us in short yards and whatnot’ but, I mean, it’s kind of like a cheapo play, man… It’s pretty much the scrum and rugby. That’s how I kind of look at it, and we got to have a scrum, too, on the other side… It’s not like you hard count, or, and this and that, where, you know, now you’re getting us or myself jumping over the pile thinking, you know, about to snap the ball. And that’s just my own personal opinion, and I’m going to leave it at that.”

Last month, the NFL and the team owners were expected to decide whether tush push should be banned or not. And the last time we checked, around 16 teams were in favour of banning the Eagles’ notorious tush push. 24 votes were required to ban it. However, the decision was tabled without a final decision. Now, the league will vote on tush-push this week.

And one thing’s sure: Frankie Luvu and the Commanders’ head coach have something to tackle the play if the league’s decision comes in favor of the Eagles.

What’s your perspective on:

Is the 'tush push' a clever strategy or just a cheap trick that needs banning?

Frankie Luvu opposes Dan Quinn’s stance over tush-push

Picture this: the team just needs a yard on 3rd or 4th down. The quarterback runs a QB sneak. But before he succeeds, someone from the opposition, usually a linebacker, tries to jump over the O-line just as the ball is snapped, hoping to crash into the QB and stop the play before it even starts. It sounds like a great strategy, but it has some cons as well. If the timing is wrong, the LB’s going to get a penalty. To make it worse, if the LB lands on someone, it could cause a gruesome collision or injury.

And yes, we’re talking about Frankie Luvu taking on the Eagles’ tush-push. Now, if you’re thinking that the head coach would oppose this strategy, given the safety concerns, think again. Because Dan Quinn isn’t that kind of guy. In fact, the Commanders’ head coach admitted that it was part of their plan to stop the Tush Push.

“Yes, it was part of the plan,” Quinn admitted last week on the Rich Eisen show while referencing Luvu’s attempt to stop tush push that resulted in three consecutive encroachments. “I deem those ones from a standpoint. This is worth the risk right here.” The catch? Well, the Eagles scored anyway. However, let’s not forget that the head coach has made one thing clear. “We’re going to go compete to see if we could stop it,” he added.

So, at the end of the day, it’s safe to say that if the league votes in favor of the Eagles and does not ban tush-push, Dan Quinn and Co. will compete against the infamous play. Plain and simple.
