The departure further thins Pittsburgh’s defensive staff and underscores Gerald Alexander’s growing reputation, while also showing how league-wide coaching changes continue to create ripple effects beyond just one team. Additionally, head coach McCarthy was reportedly keen on rehiring him.
Alexander’s move to Minnesota comes at a crucial time for the Steelers, coinciding with the hiring of Patrick Graham as their new defensive coordinator. Graham brings extensive experience, having coordinated defenses for the Raiders, Dolphins, and Giants, and worked under coaching legends like Bill Belichick and Brian Flores. His familiarity with both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes gives him the flexibility to adapt to Pittsburgh’s traditional defensive style.

For Mike McCarthy, integrating Graham is part of a strategy to blend fresh talent with continuity. While new assistants such as Jason Simmons are expected to take on prominent roles, McCarthy emphasizes building on the Steelers’ existing foundation rather than starting from scratch.

The challenge now is maintaining defensive cohesion after Alexander’s departure. The secondary will need to quickly adjust to new coaching methods, while Graham works to implement his system efficiently. Success in this transition will be critical for Pittsburgh as they aim to remain competitive in the upcoming season.

Steelers begin new era with Mike McCarthy, while honoring defensive legacy

“I feel good about the direction,” McCarthy said in his introductory press conference on Tuesday. He pointed to the team’s mix of experienced players and young talent, noting that the roster already has strong defenders and skilled offensive players who can help the Steelers compete immediately.
“I’ve had one top-five defense, and we won the Super Bowl that year. The importance of defense is critical.” He stressed the importance of defence and wants to build on what already works rather than replace everything.

The Steelers are also making other additions to their staff. Jason Simmons, a former Steelers player and current assistant with the Washington Commanders, will take an important role on defense. On offense, Scott Tolzien, who worked with McCarthy in Green Bay, is expected to interview for the offensive coordinator position. Offensive line coach James Campen is joining as well, bringing experience and knowledge.
