You’d think players might choose their words carefully around a ref’s mic. But it looks like Jaxon Smith-Njigba clearly didn’t get that memo.

It’s fair to criticize a referee’s decision. But to use NSFW language and scream it directly into his microphone? That’s a sure way of getting penalized. But Jaxon Smith-Njigba didn’t seem to care. JSN got flagged for holding, wiping out what would’ve been a touchdown run by Zach Charbonnet. As the ref started announcing the call, Smith-Njigba strolled past and let it fly: “That’s some bull—-,” he screamed. For the referee and the entire stadium to hear.

The crowd let out an “oh” as soon as he uttered those words, and the referee gave him a rather scary stare as he walked away. And JSN didn’t seem to regret what he said. And it’s not hard to understand why.

That was a pivotal call. Instead of celebrating a touchdown, the Seahawks had to settle for three against the Cardinals. With just over nine minutes left, the lead stretched to 20–6. Not the 24–6 cushion they thought they had. It could’ve been a big bottle job for the Seahawks, who were leading 14-3 at halftime.

Now, if JSN got a holding penalty, how do you reckon the NFL will deal with Amon Ra St. after what he said in the Ravens game? For context, the Detroit wideout let the emotions fly after his game-tying touchdown in the third quarter in what was…an interesting choice of words. “I run this sh–,” he said, and followed up with a racial slur.

“I was just excited, man. It was a big play in the game, a play that we needed at that time and moment. Big touchdown. I was just full of emotions and got a little excited,” he said after the game. So what punishment are we looking at?

It’s worth putting both situations in perspective. JSN’s penalty came from dropping some choice words at a ref: frustrated, sure, but at least directed at the call. Amon-Ra’s outburst was different: his was in celebration, and he let a racial slur slip out in the process. He’s in for one hefty fine.

When foul language isn’t aimed at an official, it falls under unsportsmanlike conduct. First offenses can cost up to $14,491, with repeat offenders looking at as much as $20,288. But given the severity of what he said, don’t be surprised if that price tag climbs a little higher.

At least he didn’t say it to a referee. That would’ve bumped it into the verbal or other non-physical offense against an official category, where fines start at $32,547 for a first strike. Remember when Ja’Marr Chase got fined last year vs the Chiefs when he let it all out on referee Alex Kemp?

He ended up getting hit with a $31,599 fine for “unsportsmanlike conduct.” The funny twist? It was the same referee JSN barked at. So while Amon-Ra didn’t technically go after the official, the size of that fine shows the league isn’t likely to shrug off what he said. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, meanwhile, might just skate by without much more than a slap on the wrist.
