The NFL is a juggernaut that cannot be stopped. And no matter what you think of the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, it’s hard to disagree that the sport hasn’t grown by leaps and bounds in his tenure. And the 64-year-old is backing up his talk once again.

Though the NFL International Series has been going on since 2007, this year’s matchup between the powerhouse teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins, was on a different level. Goodell understands the business better than anyone, and it looks like he is pushing to keep a promise he made.

Roger Goodell is a believer and a doer

Not only was the Chiefs vs the Dolphins matchup packed with 51,500 fans in Frankfurt, but it also broke NFL Network’s viewership records. With a combined viewership averaging at 9.6 million. “I think you’re going to see a very global NFL, not necessarily with franchises, but maybe like have one playing games on a global basis. And I see that happening in the next five to 10 years”, Goodell said after the game in Germany.

Now, the Commissioner is pushing for a vote that could make the NFL truly a global game. All 32 teams have to play one ‘home’ game outside of the USA in every 4-year rotating period. This year the NFL played 5 international games. If this vote gets passed, then the NFL International Series will expand to 9 games every year.

So in terms of timelines, Goodell even outshone himself. The worldwide fans do not have to wait for 5 or 10 years, because if the 9 games a season becomes a reality, many countries may have a football game in their cities pretty soon. But which ones will they be?

The NFL and Roger Goodell’s international love affair

The NFL preseason and exhibition games have taken place in several countries. To date, only 4 countries have hosted a regular season game. England, Canada, Mexico, and this year onwards Germany as well. “We want to grow to become a real global sport, so you have to play in more markets, clearly”, Goodell said after the game in Frankfurt. But he has already lined up the countries.

Goodell stated previously, “We’re looking primarily at Spain and Brazil. We are definitely going to play in a new market next year but we’re still debating between the two”. But now with 9 games in the offering, it could be both Spain and Brazil or some new country as well.
