Arthur Jones is no more, and the sports world is still trying to process it. The former Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman, only 39, passed away suddenly, leaving behind a wave of heartbreak. He was also the older brother of UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones and four-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Chandler Jones. For Ravens fans in Charm City, this one hits close to home.

The Ravens quickly came together to honor him. “We are terribly saddened to learn of Arthur Jones’ sudden passing,” General Manager Eric DeCosta spoke on behalf of the entire flock. “Arthur’s presence was a gift to everyone he encountered. His big, bright smile, infectious energy and eternal positivity created a presence that continuously uplifted others. He was kind, courteous and enthusiastic — always displaying a love for family, teammates and friends.” Right after, John Harbaugh made sure to add his own tribute.

Jones spent four seasons with the Ravens between 2010 and 2013, playing a big role in the team’s Super Bowl XLVII run. He spent three more years in the NFL, playing for the Colts and the Commanders as a defensive tackle. Hence, former Colts corner Darius Butler also remebered him, paying tribute. “Rest in peace, big fella! I’m going to miss our random check ins and laughs about who knows what. Arthur Jones, you will be MISSED,” he shared on X.

The reason for death is yet unknown. But Jones will definitely be in the hearts of his loved ones. And it wasn’t just football paying its respects. Not long after, Conor McGregor jumped in with his own message: “Very sad to hear this news, Arthur was a great man, a friendly giant! God speed Arthur Jones.” So, Arthur Jones wasn’t just a Raven or a brother or a teammate. He was a giant personality whose smile and spirit left a permanent mark wherever he went.

A quick recap of Arthur Jones’ NFL legacy

The Ravens found Arthur Jones in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. However, he wasn’t a flashy pick, but he made his presence felt. Over four seasons in Baltimore, he started in 20 games, while posting 100 tackles and 8.5 sacks. More importantly, he became part of a group that defined toughness in Charm City. And in that run, he reached the pinnacle by helping the Ravens win a Super Bowl – the night Ravens Flock will never forget.

Jones came up huge with a sack on Colin Kaepernick in the final moments of that wild finish in New Orleans. It all happened right before the lights went out in the Superdome during the power outage. Earlier in the game, his fumble recovery set up a Ravens touchdown. And people still discuss his decisive impact on the championship run, which was solidified during those two pivotal moments.

After the Lombardi win, Jones took his game to Indy and suited up for the Colts from 2014 to 2016, appearing in 17 games (11 starts). He later wrapped up his career with the Washington Redskins (now Commanders), playing for one season with them. That means, in total, Jones played in 64 NFL games, finishing with 173 tackles and 10 sacks. Through it all, he built a reputation for effort, grit, and leadership.
