Mike Vrabel has seen a coach-quarterback relationship up close from the inside. As a former New England Patriots linebacker, he lined up as a goal-line tight end and caught touchdown passes from Tom Brady in back-to-back Super Bowls. He knows how much the partnership between a head coach and his QB can shape a franchise. So when a report of a disagreement with Drake Maye surfaced, Vrabel wasn’t about to let it fester.

During the Wednesday broadcast of The Greg Hill Show, host Greg Hill claimed that an “insider” told him there was an ongoing rift. Hill suggested that the tension stems from the fact that Maye, who was drafted in 2024 before Vrabel was hired in 2025, was not “his guy”.

“Despite what Mike Vrabel has said publicly, it goes back to Drake Maye not being his guy. Mike Vrabel is a ‘his guy’ kind of coach,” Hill said.

However, when the Patriots head coach was asked about the same, he outright denied any rift between him and his QB1.

“Are there any issues? He heard from who? That’s one of my favorites. Unnamed sources,” Vrabel told reporters earlier today. “Okay, let me just tell you why I’m here. I’m here because Drake was the quarterback. Believe it or not, I had choices to where I wanted to coach. I wanted to coach here because Drake was the quarterback.

“So, you know, I don’t have really much other to add to that about, you know, a comment from an unnamed source. But I’ll just tell you what I’ve told numerous people if they want to ask me why I’m here.”

The rumor gained traction due to a rocky 1–2 start to the 2026 season following the New England Patriots’ blowout 35–6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Maye, who was the NFL MVP runner-up under Vrabel last season, has struggled significantly with turnovers, throwing six interceptions and losing a fumble in just three games.

Hence, earlier in the week on the same radio show with Greg Hill, Mike Vrabel offered public constructive criticism of Drake Maye’s early-season decision-making, using a golf analogy.

“Sometimes we’re so focused on it that we try to choke the life out of the golf club, and we’re squeezing it so damn tight that the ball has no choice but to go sideways,” Vrabel said. “We need to stop trying to choke the life out of every single play. We need to relax.”

While Vrabel’s public critique was firm, both he and team sources maintain that there is no personal rift or misalignment regarding Maye’s status as the team’s franchise quarterback.

On top of that, despite a comparatively struggling output from Maye, even the Patriots QB’s teammates are extending full support to their offensive leader.

“We’re riding with him until the wheels come off,” tackle Will Campbell told reporters, via journalist Mark Daniels on X.

Next up, the New England Patriots and Drake Maye will face the in-form Buffalo Bills (3-0) on October 4, and it will be interesting to see how this matchup turns out for the third-year quarterback.
