Rarely does an NFL player of Kayshon Boutte’s stature speak so openly about a gambling addiction. On Jan 7, the New England Patriots wide receiver turned heads with a personal essay on The Players’ Tribune.  He detailed his struggles and his comeback journey, a story that has made the franchise proud.

“That’s not easy to do,” head coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged, via Mike Kadlick on X. “He’s a private person, but I’ve seen a lot of growth from him personally … For him to be able to open up and share those things publicly, and as candidly as he did, I’m proud of him.”

The “growth” Vrabel mentioned was clearly visible when he got his hands on the ball. After getting drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the young receiver stepped up as one of the most trusted targets for quarterback Drake Maye.

In 14 games this season, he caught 33 passes for 551 yards and scored six touchdowns. His presence made a significant impact in the Patriots’ 16-3 wild-card win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Despite dealing with a hamstring injury that limited his practice time, he led the team with four catches for 66 receiving yards.

While fans love to see his success on the gridiron, his life off the field a few years ago at LSU was a completely different story. In his essay titled “How The Hell Did I Get Here???” Boutte shared how he fell in love with gambling at an early age. 

“I’d wake up early in the morning, and the first thing I’d do was bet. I’d stay up late and bet. All day. All night,” Boutte revealed. “I had insomnia, so if I woke up in the middle of the night, phone next to the bed, I’d bet. Any little money I had, it was going straight to [betting].”

Things took a dramatic turn in January 2024, when he was arrested in Louisiana for illegal sports gambling. He was accused of using a fake account to place bets while he was still under 21, which is the legal gambling age in the state. He was deeply entrenched in a “dark road” of gambling, losing nearly $90,000 of his own money on different platforms.

Some of those bets were even placed on LSU games, although investigators confirmed he never bet against himself. He eventually turned himself in on charges of computer fraud and underage gaming. After completing a recovery program, the charges were finally dismissed. 

Since the incidents were tied to his college years, the NFL did not issue a suspension or pursue the case later on. He could have gotten kicked out of the team or traded to another franchise, which teams usually do against players facing legal charges. But the Patriots stood by him and helped him make a return.

In his essay, he wrote, “I owe the Patriots organization everything, because after the season ended, my past came back on me.”

Going back to 2022, players like Calvin Ridley (WR) didn’t have this luxury. He was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars by the Atlanta Falcons while still serving a suspension for the entire season. A year later, cornerback Isaiah Rodgers faced a similar fate. He was suspended in 2023 for betting on NFL games and was released by the Indianapolis Colts immediately.

The legality of the situation might be a bit different for Boutte; the Patriots still chose to give him a second chance.

What got Kayshon Boutte back on the right path?

Boutte might not have ever recovered if it weren’t for two major factors in his life. He admitted in his essay that he didn’t fix his life entirely on his own. Getting healthy enough to play football again and becoming a father during his junior year of college were the reasons he survived it and continues walking on that path. 

“Nothing wakes you up faster than that,” he admitted about becoming a father in 2023. “Growing up, my dad was a real hard-working dude, doing offshore, blue-collar work— getting up at 5 or 6 a.m. I didn’t really come from a rich household, but anything we wanted, my parents made it happen. And I wanted to be that for my family.”

Also, an injury that he suffered in his sophomore season at LSU pushed him more into gambling. He recalled the period to be frustrating as ever. But his recovery and ability to play football again at the highest level motivated him to keep his distractions aside.

Even though he wasn’t at his best after his junior season in college, the Patriots saw his “potential” and drafted him using their 187th overall pick. He wanted to hear his name on day one, but he had to wait until the sixth round.

Eventually, it didn’t matter at all. He got the opportunity to play with an esteemed franchise and climb up the ladder as a vital piece in Coach Vrabel’s offense.
