Essentials Inside The Story

  • A late injury scare briefly cast doubt over New England's Super Bowl hopes.
  • Drake Maye has finally addressed the concern himself.
  • Head coach Mike Vrabel also addressed Maye's injury concerns.

After a day off on Tuesday, quarterback Drake Maye entered the Super Bowl week with a shoulder injury. That’s sure to be concerning if you are a Patriots fan, although a reassurance from Maye himself can be a lot more comforting. Early signs are good since he was a full participant at the practice session on Wednesday, but here is the latest on his injury.

“Feels good,” he said, rolling his shoulder. “That’s why you have guys in the training room, nimble-footed people working on keeping me healthy. I’m feeling great to go.”

He was already injured before the AFC Championship game, but scraped through. Unfortunately, the game against the Denver Broncos left him banged up once again. It occurred in the third quarter, right after a 13-yard run. On that play, safety Talanoa Hufanga made the tackle and came down hard on Maye’s right shoulder. Since then, things haven’t looked good. For instance, on the Patriots’ Super Bowl bye week injury report, he was listed as questionable, and he also missed Friday’s practice due to an illness.

But on Monday, he revealed that he was doing well. The franchise was at Stanford University that day for a 90-minute practice, and the quarterback took every opportunity to throw. It seems like the two weeks were enough for him to get better. The fact that he was a full participant in practice on Wednesday is a good sign for his team’s championship glory.

“I feel good. I’ll be just fine,” Maye said during his press conference on Super Bowl LX Opening Night on Monday. “I threw a good bit. I threw as much as I would at a normal practice. I felt great and am looking forward to getting back out there on Wednesday and Thursday for practice and Friday to get ready for a normal week of prep.

“I really had no doubt in being 100 percent for the game. It’s the Super Bowl, you get two weeks to prepare for it. Do whatever you have to do to get it right, and I’ve got confidence and feel good,” Maye further said on Monday, rotating his right shoulder.

With that, he also appreciated the team’s athletic training staff, led by Jim Whalen, for helping him recover. Maye will become the second-youngest quarterback to ever start a Super Bowl. It goes without saying that it is a moment he won’t want to miss. The franchise now has Thursday, and Friday practices left before playing in Santa Clara. So, while the quarterback’s reassurance will help, not all is well with them. Linebacker Robert Spillane is still away. Though he said he was sure he would play against the Seahawks, he was not a part of the practice session on Wednesday. Then, linebacker Harold Landry was a limited participant.

For now, though, the Patriots’ biggest concern, which was Drake Maye, seems to be doing well. Had they lost him to injury, they wouldn’t have been a scary offense, even if Josh Dobbs is a great quarterback. Maye has had a huge contribution to where the team is right now, and that’s the reason he is an MVP candidate.

No wonder, even head coach Mike Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels issued a vote of confidence in their star signal-caller’s health before the biggest game of the season.

Vrabel and McDaniels issue positive update on Drake Maye’s fitness after injury

Drake Maye had a great regular season, completing 72 percent of his passes for 4,394 yards, throwing 31 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. He even added 450 rushing yards and four more scores. Because of that, losing him for the Super Bowl would have been devastating for the Patriots.

As they try to relive what they pulled off in 2015 against the Seattle Seahawks, when they won 28-24, not having their quarterback would have stripped the offense of its biggest weapon and made that task far tougher. To reassure fans about the health of their QB1, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel reiterated on Monday that Maye looked good.

“We had a good third-down day,” he said. “I thought that the ball came out good. I thought it was a crisp practice for Drake and for everybody else.”

But it doesn’t end there. Subsequently, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was also asked if he expected any limitations with Maye’s shoulder entering Sunday’s contest.

“Nope,” McDaniels responded with just a word.

Considering the player and his coaches sound so confident, fans don’t have many reasons to be worried about Maye not playing on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. All they have to do is pray that the franchise can continue its stellar form for one more game and bring home the Lombardi Trophy for the first time since 2019.
