Patrick Mahomes is a man of many talents! The road to NFL stardom wasn’t smooth or guaranteed. It was messy, uncertain, and often complicated. Growing up in a sports-driven home as the son of former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes Sr., Patrick had the talent to pursue baseball, basketball, or football. So, how did he choose?

Chiefs QB’s mom just admitted to this in her recent Instagram story. Randi Mahomes recently dropped a hint at the defining moment that changed everything. Her post included a video with the caption, “I can’t wait to tell you this story and hear more about yours! Enter for a chance to win a Zoom session with me!” Indeed, if any sports parent requires real, unfiltered advice, there’s no better person to give it. She has seen it all, lived it all, helping to shape what he is today.

Hence, through the Zoom meeting, she intended to share first-hand lessons from Patrick’s journey. Opening up about the quarterback’s childhood, she committed to discussing how basketball helped shape his skills as a QB. Also, despite strong family ties to baseball, why he didn’t choose it as his path. Teasing an untold story about the moment Patrick had to decide between baseball and basketball, she remarked in the video, “He loved both.”

Randi Mahomes also dropped a cryptic message: “And honestly, I wasn’t sure what the right path was for him. And then something happened that changed everything.” The full story? She’s saving that for a Zoom session with sports parents. However, one thing’s for sure—this wasn’t some easy, clear-cut decision. Randi Mahomes concluded the video by saying, “Enter for a chance to win and let’s talk about your journey as a sports parent.” Enough to induce curiosity.

From a young age, Mahomes excelled in football, baseball, and basketball at Whitehouse High School in Texas. While many believed he would follow in his dad’s footsteps, Patrick was more drawn to basketball. He revealed that during a ‘Would You Rather?’ interview with Jake from State Farm. The host asked about his preference: basketball or baseball. And his instant response was, “100% basketball.”

In a 2024 ESPN feature on Mahomes’s high school basketball career, the Showtime admitted, “Basketball was my first love.” Even NBA superstar Steph Curry analyzed Mahomes’s game, offering some feedback: “His creativity is great, but his jump shot needs some work.” Mahomes responded with humor: “It goes in… it doesn’t always have to be pretty. I’m not gonna shoot like Steph.” And whatever happened next is well known to all.

As a sports parent, she believed that being the loudest cheerleader and most involved parent was the best way to support her son Patrick. But Patrick’s statement compelled her to rethink her approach to parenting. She remarked, “There was a time when Patrick came to me and said something that made me completely rethink how I was supporting him. And let me tell you, it wasn’t easy to hear.”

And, while she hasn’t publicly disclosed it, one thing was clear: she had to change. She adds, “As a sports parent, you want to be involved in everything. You want to cheer the loudest and give the best advice. But sometimes, support means stepping back.” That’s correct.

Randi didn’t just stop at self-reflection. She also actively sought out professional guidance from Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, a licensed psychologist and performance coach. She referred her to know the best way so that athletes like Patrick and Mia can handle pressure.

Dr. Lombardo’s response was simple: “The best thing to do is to get out of that psychological red zone when we’re in a fight-or-flight state. So the best way to do that is to take a deep breath, inhale, and then exhale twice as much.” Now, as she takes notes from her evolution as a parent, she is keen to share them with the rest of the world to help out the parents of athletes.
